missing subaru forester - gkp107
I have a 2000 Subaru Forester Turbo which has been missing around 3-4000 revs. Several visit to my local Subaru agent have merely elicited the response "until something shows up on the computer we can't pinpoint the problem".

I understand that replacing parts on a trial and error basis would prove expensive, especially when you look at the price of Subaru spares and main agents hourly rates, but would appreciate any advice you may be able to give to solve this problem

Does it do it every time you get to those revs? And only under load or in neutral too?

Reminds me of the old joke:
Pilot reports: Number three engine missing.
Technician replies: Number three engine found on port wing next to number four.

That would be a neat trick! No 3 would be on the starboard wing, comments an ancient pilot. I get the joke though!

And now back to gkp107's question please.

I had a slight missing on a old Mazda I had - took it to dealers and they diagnosed an arcing coil -as they hadn't got one in stock they taped it up so got one from car accessory shop - still arced - turned out to be a HT lead - if you have a multi meter test your leads - my old mazda book gave the resistance of each lead - one had broken core wire - changed leads and was perfect.

Most likely to be an ignition problem I would have thought. Could you try an independent Suby repairer - there are quite a few around. In my part of the world there's API (Warwickshire) and Roger Clark (SW Leicestershire) - but plenty of others elsewhere in the country. This Boxer engine has a long history and is used in all the Subys so there is quite a good 'body of knowledge' on what does and doesn't go wrong.
