Evening all,
I need your advise, good people.
I have a Ford Cougar, with 75K on clock. Laterly I have noticed that when accelerating (in any gear), I hear a rattling sound (I think it sounds like its coming from the exhaust). But if the clutch is down and put peddle down you can't really hear it.
She is 7 yrs old with full service history, last done at 69k.
any ideas??

pre-ignition, engine prob needs a de coke

Use a fuel additive, Shell V-power or Greenergy 99 RON fuel and drive like an italiann for a few weeks and see what happens.

It could be big end rattle.

A modern car like this shouldn't need a decoke

Hi pritcsi,
My Dad had the same problem with his cougar which initally the local garage thought was pinking so suggested using super unleaded v power etc but after he had no joy with that i booked it into a specialist tuning company which after a lot of testing and computer dignosting revealed everythig was running fine and they diagnosed a rattling butterfly valve in the inlet manifold his is the 2.5 V6 auto model.
I hope this might help,
Maretz

My Honda - 6 yrs old had a sound like rattling tin cans when you accelerated past typically 55-60mph.
It was the CAT - looked sound from the outside buy had problems internally. New CAT and the rattle disappeared and so did £200 of my money.

My money would be on the exhaust baffles or catalyst. Often they don't rattle when the car is off load (i.e revving in driveway), but do when its driven and under load.

Evening all,
Well, after days of getting mates to look at my cat, I had a look myself (knowing nothing about cars), I noticed a broken clamp (metal ring) and the front of the exhaust.
Think its called the downpipe, come out of the engine, then just behind the engine the is a metal ring (about half an inch wide and about 1mm thick) that wraps around the pipe, my guess to stop pipe from moving from side to side. Half of the ring/clamp has broken off (rusted off) so when I accelerate the ring rattles on the pipe.
I can remove this and replace it later??
thanks you help so far, peeps
