Does anyone know the typical and maximum penalty for disobeying no u-turn and no right-turn road signs? Thanks.

If I have read this correctly a magistrate could give you 3 points on your licence and a fine of up to £1,000 but you cannot be banned as it was not a stop sign, no entry, traffic light or double white lines. Alternatively the fixed penalty scheme could be used, leading to a standard fine and 3 penalty endorsement.

But in London these offences have been de criminalised so only a penalty applies

Then of course if you did it at the wrong moment without looking you could pay the ultimate price under the wheels of a thundering juggernaut. Not exactly a 'penalty', lol, but just as bad. Even worse indeed, depending on how you feel in general of course...

"juggernaut"
Or a Juggernugernaut as a learned old colleague used to insist on calling them. I remember a case he defended using this term repeatedly in Court and had them in stiches (he was Oxford Educated), he won the case but I suspect not on a point of law.....he was a wise old owl.

Thanks for the answers. Yes, ignoring a sign could be dangerous.

The signs mentioned in the original post - No U Turn (614) and No Right Turn (612) whilst authorised signs and erected as the result of a Traffic Regulartion Order, they do not feature in Reg 10 Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002 as a sign to which Section 36 Road Traffic Act 1988 applies in making the offence failing to conform to a traffic sign which attracts a max fine of £1,000, discretionary disqualification and 3 penalty points.
Disobeyance of the signs under the TRO is contrary to Section 5 (8 in London) Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 attarcting a max fine of £1,000 only.

Thanks DVD.
I asked this question as one week ago the police saw me do a u-turn at a junction where it was forbidden. The signs were quite obvious and I knew full well what I was doing. Anyway, I was pulled over, given a verbal ticking off, a £60 fine, 3 points and told to present my documents and licence at the local police station. It seemed fair enough to me as they were doing their job properly. The officer on the desk told me that it was an automatic 3 points. Well blow me, but this morning I received a letter in the post from the police saying that the incident had been reviewed, and no further action would be taken, but that I should take more care in the future. So, no fine, and no points. Maybe they reckon that what I have already had to do has taught me a lesson, which is probably true. Or maybe showing manners and respect for the police also helped.
As an aside I believe that ignoring certain signs such as a red traffic light are considered to be far more serious offences.

You're a very very lucky Leif. A very lucky one, I doubt whether it was your contrition they took into account, possibly some flaw in the paperwork.

That certainly sounds plausible. I would guess that if I was to be let off, they would do it with a verbal or written caution at the time of the incident.
Oddly enough when I was seated in the back of their car, the driver mentioned that a u-turn on that road was dangerous due to the number of high speed police cars using that junction. So I mentioned in passing that a week earlier I had nearly gone into the side of a police car that had gone across a junction on a red light and then stopped in my path. It was just down the road from where they stopped me. I am sure the mood of his colleagues changed as they became remarkably friendly and even apologised for spoiling my morning. Is that normal? It would have been a remarkable coincidence if it was the same car.
Ah well, I think I had better donate the fine that never was to a charity. It will do no harm.

Congratulations Leif, and good for them. Reflects credit on all concerned.

Looks like they realised their mistake and bowed out gracefully......

Cyclists do it all the time, seemingly with impunity!
