BMW318iSE - rear seat belts - JimP
Does anyone know off hand if this car has 3 seatbelts in th back seats.

I don't think either the E36 (1990 - 1998) or the E46 (1998 - 2005) have three shoulder belts but I think the E90 (2005 -) does.

They would all have a middle lap belt though.

Hopefully a BMW owner can confirm the above.

I think there are 3 seat belts, but the centre one is lap only....?

Spot on. Centre belt in the E36 is a lap belt.

On my 2002 318SE a lapbelt was standard and a three point belt an optional extra at £75. It seemed an odd omission on an otherwise top spec car! I Maybe its possible to upgrade afterwards but you'd need to check the effect on the rear seat trim etc, it may not be a simple swap out.

Lap belts are lethal IMO. I was speaking to an osteopath a while back who was commenting on their compromised safety. A quick google search throws up this:

Lap belts are lethal IMO.

It is often lethal being thrown out of a car.

I accept serious damage can be done in accidents.

"If you or a loved one has been seriously injured or died as a result of a lap belt then you have a legal action against the seat belt and/or the automobile manufacturer of the vehicle."

OR could it be the owners fault for buying such a vehicle ?

The middle three point seat belt was a cost option for E46 3-series, but became standard on the E90.

As I posted a few weeks ago, my new 330D only had a lap belt, and so was keen to get a 3rd 3 point retro-fitted. Aprilla pointed me in the direction of Autosafe in London - www.auto-safe.co.uk, 020 7372 3141.

They fitted it yesterday, and the quality of workmanship was excellent. The fitter took masses of the rear out, found the original mounting points, made an aperture where the factory would have for the seat belt to pass through, and re-assembled it perfectly. He took pictures all the way through, so that when he came to hand over, he could show me exactly what he had done.

Could not recccomend more highly - £215, including coming up to Milton Keynes

Hope that helps

My E46 has a lap belt only and it's one of my main gripes with the car, fortunately been a coupe I rarely squeeze three people into the back anyway! :-)
