hi.
the problem is starting a 1991 polo gt engine.
I have fitted a new starter motor, i've doubled up on earth straps, the solenoid has a strong click so the ignition barrel is ok, the starter just doesn't turn.
note: this is a temperamental fault, sometimes it fires right up with no trouble.
any ideas??

Are you sure battery and connections are ok,if as you say solenoid clicks, suggests not enough power to motor but enough to operate solenoid

i'm sure the battery is ok, when it does go (after trying about 20 times really fast) the starter turns over quickly and strong. Terminals are clean and tight.

Ignition switch fault, thus the starter solenoid is not pulling in. Regards Peter

he says the solenoid clicks each time...doesnt that rule out the ign switch?

Is the starter pre-engaged or inertia.??If it is inertia and has a seperate solenoid it could be dirty/worn contacts in the solenoid but if it is pre-engaged then he does say he has changed starter.

Changed for what a second hand one.

The hayner says it a pre-engaged starter.
I've had 3 different ones on, the current one is a brand new (well refurbed) vag one.

I had 1983 1.3 coupe s that had a similar problem, turned out that where the end of the starter motor locates into the gearbox, there is a little brass bush/bearing. If I remember correctly, it was about 10 to 12 mm in diameter by about 10 mm deep. My one had all but worn away , allowing the end of the starter to run on the aluminium gearbox casing (in actual fact it didn't run, the friction on the casing wouldn't allow it to spin) the bush cost about a pound 10 years ago from the place that supplied my new starter. Was easy to fit once I had removed the starter.

Looks like i'll have to get a new bush then.
Thanks for your help.
