Hi all,

Moving house shortly, and need to realise some cash. Will sell my MGB GT come spring (hope for £3k+), will therefore need a second vehicle to replace it (other half is keeping her MX5).

So what I'm after is a car costing under a grand that fulfills both the bangernomics and classic criteria.

Any ideas?

There's a nice J plate Scirroco on ebay at the moment going pretty cheap. And a mint 1976 Toledo went yesterday for £870- liked the look of both! I'm not fussed if it's fashionable, just interesting. Must have 4 seats and a bit of boot space.

All advice gladly accepted!

Cheers then,

Alex.

Audi Coupe - the second series is based on the 80/90. Still quite a good-looking beast, and GSF stock all the parts. Avoid the Quattro as a) it's been thrashed and b) it's being sold as it's been thrashed too far.

eg: tinyurl.com/yuflne - a 20V, so 170 bhp.

As you're already a Mazda owner, I'd say the Xedos is a minor classic. Amazingly smooth and refined, with a depth of paint that would not disgrace a Californian custom shop. Mind you, I'm biased - see other Bangernomics thread.

Half of the fun of bangernomics is picking up the freeads or local paper and see what is out there.
Sometimes your lucks in and something someone wants out the way is going cheap,or my likely as my luck would have it ,i would have just brought one for twice the price :)'

That'll be a Citroën CX GTi Turbo, then.

Four seats
A bit of boot space
Interesting
Under a grand (maybe)
Easily maintained

OK - scrub that last bit.......... :-)

Mum had a Mk1 and Mk2 Scirroco '75 to '77 ish. The Mk1 was quite unlike anything I had driven before; I found it fast and with excellent handling. Rear seats not exactly adult size. The Mk2 seemed bloated and not as quick. The Mk2 was replaced by an Opel Manta 1.9; quick, slightly larger rear seats and RWD. Great fun. If you will excuse the digression, it was the Opel Manta with Mum driving that held the family record from Mumbles, south Wales to Otley, Yorkshire; 285 miles in 4 hours 4 mins.

Id suggest a 70's Merc as they last well and can be used as daily drivers without lots of attention - stacklight ones are a little expensive for a good one but the later ones havent started rising yet and a 230E is a good place to start although the 280E is the bruiser.

Sit in one of these and an interior from the latest Merc will look even cheaper than it already does!

Have you thought of a Saab 900 turbo - late model (eg 92) with ABS? 3 doors look best in my view. Huge boot. Understated, not flash. Cheap classic insurance, lots of independant specialists. Poorish mpg is the downside.

mrsmm has a 88 Scirroco i find it quite a good fun car. As with all VAG products of this era its very well put together. It can and does get used everyday.
On the downside/
I would NOT like to have a crash in it you do feel very vulnerable in it
Also some spare are becoming problamatic as it is now not held in such high esteem as Golf mk 1&2's only the basic bits can be obtained from people like GSF & the like
I too like the old Audi 80 coupe or 1 of the sportier Audi80's make good buys

Rover P6 or Triumph 2000/2500? Both as cheap as chips and cheap bits. Should be able to get tax exempt too. Always found them reliable if maintained. Just watch the rust, but you'll already know that being an MBG owner.
Whatever you buy for that money, old or modern, will have close to zero depreciation, so classic insurance and no annual cartax will make a big difference in running costs.
Dare to be different!
