205 Air Flow Meter - parts - autumnboy
A friend of mine has a 205 1.9 GTI and has a problem where it will not tick over or fast tick over properly.

Checked the mixture and ignition settings, but the problem seems to be the Air Flow Meter tracking. This has been traced by info he found on the net..

The Carbon track is grooved and I have adjusted its sweep onto a good part of the carbon, but from the Ohms readings as per the Info. Its still faulty.

So where can I get a new or refurbished Carbon board for this car. I know I could get a AFM complete, from Pug Spares at £280, which is not an Idea.

Thanks

It's amazing isn't it. Every man and his dog used to sell rubbish VAF re-cons for £30 a few years ago; now they're virtually unobtainable.

The last time I bought one [18 months ago?] it had to come straight from Bosch Autoparts. A lot less than £280. The part number is cast into the unit.

Be sure it's an idle mixture, not an idle airflow, issue. There was a known problem with the idle channel in the throttle housing; but it's so long ago I forget the details. Manifold gasket issues weren't unknown either.

As there has been little response to your question from this site, try on

Isn't there an air-bleed by-pass screw (allen key) for adjusting the idle mixture on the airflow meter by allowing unmetered air to pass through? Maybe this is blocked.
On some I think there was also an electically heated bypass on the throttle too, this was metered air for a fast idle at startup, as it was metered, more fuel was injected also. Was there also a cold start injector too in the metal intake manifold?
Good luck!

Thanks for your replies.

I'm 99.9% its the carbon sweep causing the problem, because when its at idle its sometimes very lumpy. So if I move the arm on the carbon board a nats either side of that point it idles ok and also the meter shows there to be a fault in this same area.

As I have all the info downloaded for this type of problem and the cleaning of the components, everything from the SAD unit, throttle stop setting etc and cleaned all the bleed holes etc in the AFM, SAD and throttle body with Carb cleaner as per the info.

I can get a complete refurbished AFM from APT for approx. £120. but all is really needed is the Carbon pcb board, could get one from a scrappy for £30 if its any good for how long.

No, there is no 5th injector in these engines, a temperature sensor on the side of the engine tell the ECU to deliver more fuel along with the extra air from the SAD unit for cold starting.

thanks

I hope you can get a new part, but in the meantime, on your airflow meter, can you adjust the spring tension by a notch? I seem to recall (about 12+ years ago!) a curved toothed thing with a spring hooked onto a tooth, usually with a dot of yellow paint, maybe it is held with a screw? You should mark it first and be aware that the spring is stronger than you'd expect. Maybe you could just lean or richen one notch to move idle off the dead spot. I would probably go leaner and try it. The airflow meter is alogarythmic, so most of the travel is for lower rpm, this is where accurate fuel metering is most important for driveability, and I think by 4000rpm the airflow meter is on max all the way up to the red line, and after that fuelling is just done by engine speed and throttle position (0, mid or wide open).

Thanks, but already have tried that by as much as 3 or 4 notches, but have to be careful not to get too lean as he likes to use upper rev range (Melting Pistons). The other thing I tried was to the opposite way for it to be richer, then it stinks and that won't be good washng the oil off the bores. ??

thanks anyway.
