My 1995 VW Passat estate tailgate struts are getting very weak.
Does anyone know a way of repairing them?
Or is it a replace and throw away job?
I've been quoted £46 for a pair. Is this a good price?

I'm sure I heard or read somewhere that gas struts could be serviced - or did I dream it?

Having been the Project Engineer in charge of gas spring installations at Rover/Land Rover on several projects and knowing the Stabilus product very well:
Steer well clear of having your gas struts re-gassed (Stabilus don't do it!). I know several companies that do it, but I can say no more than the sound advice just given.

Are similarly cheap replacement struts available for a Ford Escort estate, early 90s vintage? I seem to remember a dealer quoting around £35 plus VAT.
