Both my keys fobs to the Passat have now broken (the silver bit at the top that fits onto a key ring). Managed to locate my wife's handed in at a local Kwik Save which was lucky because I gather that they are over £100 to replace. She wondered why I was so relieved as she assumed that we could pick one up from the local cobblers for £4.99.
I have glued them both with slow setting Araldite which lasted a couple of months before snapping again.
Just wondered if anyone could recommend an easy to obtain glue or compound that will repair the broken bit and stay repaired so that O can have confidence that I wont loose either of them. It looks like an alloy type of meta that has broken.

Mine looked shabby, so I just bought better condition used ones on ebay, and swapped all the gubbins over!

Don't know the answer, but would love to. Mine (vw Golf) has done exactly the same - must be a weak point.
What "gubbins" need to be switched over to a key from ebay?

It is possible to obtain a type of epoxy which has aluminium powder in it. It is very strong and ideal for repairing such things. A4 Metalset is one brand, but Loctite/Permatex and 3M all do a similar product.

Where can I buy it from Pete please?

Try JD Weld, available from Halfords for about a fiver...very good stuff.

Halfords don't sell JBWeld anymore, nor do Wilkos, they seem to have standardised on BISON adhesives. I bought some BISON Epoxy Metal and it may be the same as JB Weld, it smells the same and looks the same.
The 'gubbins' is everything but the case.

Tells you how to change the battery, you can then just swap the covers at the same time from the newer key to yours.
I swapped mine, as the VW badge was scratched and the white legends on the buttons showing the padlock and boot symbols were rubbing off.
You may as well try glueing it first, but it may be best to separate the two halves first, otherwise you may unwittingly glue it together, and if the battery needs replacing, you will be snookered!

Managed to get two off EBay at £5 each and changed the gubbins as suggested above.
Thanks

Thanks for updating this thread - I'll do the same myself now.

I swapped over the bit with the battery in it and then decided to also use the top bit from the new one.
I removed the small cotter pin from the key and moved it to the new EBay one to end up with a brand new fob apart from the old key. Great!
Went out to the car and unlocked it. Fine. Inserted the key and the car started only to then cut out with an 'immobilised' message on the dash.
Swapped the metal key bit back to my old one and it was fine. Must be a transponder or something in the top bit that you can't see. Never thought that it wouldn't work for one moment.
Now have a nice solid safe key back on the key ring for a fiver which I'm pleased with.
Good luck.
