Yet another video of people driving insanely in horrendous conditions..

I don't see much insane driving - to be honest if it's as slippery as that there's not much you can do, witness the world's slowest handbrake turn 40 seconds in!

The only answer is not to drive, but that's not something that would occur to most people.

Looks to me like 100% black ice or compacted snow - no way to drive on it without studded tyres!

....but how come the guy crossing the road on foot didn't slip and slide all over the place?

he pedestrian could have been wearing socks over his shoes! I agree that there's not much you could do in those conditions if you start to slide in a vehicle-(it looked as though the roads were on a slight incline). However it's a fact of physics that a 2 ton SUV is going to slide further and hit harder than a smaller car. The lunacy I referred to concerned the car in the last few seconds of the clip, which seemed to be accelerating down the road.

The roads all appeared to be on a considerable slope, which of course makes a mildly slippery road lethal.

Strange thing that cars don't seem to grip as well as they used to. I remember being driven in a 1950s Alvis, in a bad winter in about 1963, and the car had no problem getting a grip at all. It was big and heavy with RWD, with enormous cross-ply tyres, and the owner just drove it normally with no problems at all - on ice or deep snow. It was conspicuously better even then than the new breed of FWD cars just coming in - Minis etc.

2 tons of car on 4 inch tyres cuts a lot better through the snow than half the weight on twice the tread width!

So does that mean that the trend for cars getting increasingly heavy, is, in some ways, a good thing - but the trend for fatter tyres is not?

Depends if you design a car for the use it'll get 1 day a year. Oops, I think I've just described the marketing model for 4x4's!!

We live near the bottom of a very steep hill which intersects a busy on a blind bend. Over the years it's been quite amazing how many times people (often residents) have done stupid and dangerous things when we've had snow or ice. They seem to think that their cars can cope with anything and often then find themselves trapped sideways on the hill looking like the idiots they are. Not all that long ago I was out clearing the snow/ice and one neighbour came out of her drive on the brow of the hill and proceeded to drive quickly down it towards me oblivious of the danger and peering out of a small hole she'd cleared in the ice on her windscreen . I have no idea what she thought I was doing but she obviously didn't feel she should exercise any caution whatsoever despite the dangerous conditions and the fact that she'd have real problems stopping at the bottom. Given the number of total idiots driving around on our roads in a world of their own I'm only surprised that there are'nt far more accidents!

The black 7 series BMW at the end seemed to take it in it's stride.
Notice how he didn't signal to turn left, at least the car made it.
