I've often thought that the faster you go the less time you spend on a journey so less chance of hitting somebody.

Traffic congestion is as much a causal factor in accidents as speed, so increased average speeds that reduce journey times and thus congestion make sense.

Couldn't agree more! When I learnt to ride a bike I was taught that the bike's best safety device was a firm right wrist. The safest way to get out of trouble is to accelerate out of it! I know this dates me but it is rather fun to drive fast when your age exceeds the speed limt!

Humph. Not sure it does actually, except discreet speeding by ambulances. But it certainly enriches life without endangering it particularly.
