Can someone please explain why the Jaguar X type diesel range has no auto box option?
Seems a very obvious lack! BMW and Mercedes have no trouble with an auto box for this class of car.

id like to know aswell. my father wanted a deisel auto x-type as he doesnt like the mercedes models. seems a very silly ommision

Ford had a great tiptronic type auto option on the 2.0 TDCi Mondeo, same engine as the 2.0d X-Type, at one time it was said to be being lined up for the X-Type however Ford have now dropped it from the Mondeo range because it was not selling well.

there's apparently going to be an auto option in 2008........but don't know why there's a delay
have persuaded SWMBO that auto is best......(lots of town driving)......... so the auto option will be on the shopping list

See also Toyota and Honda. Is it linked to limited diesel-fuelled cars in US, hence consider not worth developing?
With limited power-band of diesels autos are useful.

I agree - diesel autos are much maligned. I was put off the X-type by there being no auto option for the diesel: also the clutch managed to be both heavy and fierce, best suited to a left-footed gorilla.
I think Ford have had some trouble with CVT gearboxes with the C-MAX so maybe that's why they were withdrawn from the Mondeo.
I don't think there's anything that an X-type can do that an Audi A4 can't do as well or better. The TDCI brigade would probably compare X-type and Mondeo in the same way.

SWMBO has one, which i obviously drive and the clutch is not at all heavy.........in fact it's the opposite. Madam did her achilles tendon in her left leg (and we had to swap cars for 4 months, as mine is auto)....it took her a while to use the leg properly and limped for ages, she wouldn't have driven her car too soon if it had been heavy clutched.
it is however easy to stall if you're not used to it. You soon adapt and ensure you've given it enough revs.

The Mondeo unit was a tiptronc auto unrelated to the C-max unit, availability seems to be the only issue with the C-Max auto.

The X-Type diesel is more refined than any 4 cyl VAG engine. The A4 of course has a much wider range of petrol engines plus auto diesel options.

Fair point Cheddar - my A4 was a 6-cylinder 2.5 TDI, which avoided the drone which can be typical of 4-cylinder siseal autos.
I will have a good look at Fords next time - anyone know if Mondeos and C-Maxes have a better resale value than they used to? That's what has put me off buying a Ford with my own money.

Buy carefully and you can avoid losing a load - the ST Fords are a great bet for this. Take the ST TDCi Mondeo for example. It's been out for over 2 years, been available for £16-£17k new from a broker throughout this period (£22k list) and STILL there is not a SINGLE car for less than £12k on Autotrader.
£3k a year depreciation on a brand new Mondeo?
|
I considered an X type 2.2 diesel estate as a replacement for my A3 - fully loaded examples with a few hundred miles are available for new A3 money, but no auto option has put me off.

Why can't Jag pinch the Volvo D5 engine with Geartronic transmission from their P.A.G. stablemate?
Ford have recently re-worked the Volvo 5-cylinder petrol engine for the hot Focus and the S-Max, haven't they?
A so-called "premium" brand, with no automatic diesel...??
|
Surely much of of the problem is because the "X" is 4wd.and that would need a completely new design of autobox.
|
2.0 and 2.2 diesel, as well as 2.1 petrol are front wheel drive.......the 2.5 and 3.0 petrol are 4wd

I know Jaguar thought long and hard about this. There were two choices.
1. Trilby hat and chequered blanket with leather straps
2. Auto box.
As you know, the hat and blanket won.
