Anyone else got Pirelli P7 tyres and find them very noisy?

I've got P7's and they are fantastic, good in the wet and dry. I have not noticed any noise, but I usually listen to the radio.

I had them on my last car, and they were a bit noisier than the Goodyear F1s I had before, but they lasted twice as long, gripped 95% as well and cost £10 less, so I didn't mind. What's more, they were excellent in the two days of snow we had in winter '06 whereas the F1s were like sledge runners.

I'd be interested to know how people judge whether their tyres are 'quiet' or 'noisy'. I've had Pirelli P6000 and/or Michelin Primacy tyres at various times on my last three cars and, while I've noticed enormous differences in noise on varying road surfaces, I really couldn't tell you if one type was any noisier (or, if I'm honest, better or worse in any other respect) than the other.

If you go to www.mytyres.co.uk you can price your choice of tyre & get a sort of 'roadtest' report, for lots of the brands, when you select the ones you fancy.

I have an O6 Focus 1.6 LX (100ps) fitted with P7's and must agree I find them very noisy. I've done a bit of reading up and have come across many references to the new Focus suffering excessive road noise. Also Pirelli's generally seem to be rated as quite a noisy tyre. Mine is bad enough to warrant a change in tyres quite soon, despite only having 10K miles on them.

Seant, what make of tyre do you think you'll get to replace the P7's?

I've got Pirelli P7's on my car and for me, they're splendid. What car do you have them on ? As when I've done a search for replacing mine, the choice of other brands isn't huge at all.

In fact after doing a quick serach, the only tyres that will fit my car are Pirelli P7's, just as well that I like them !

I'm not too sure now. I've been reading all sorts of advice on the web and have found several different sites telling me to go for Pirelli's as they are quiet and others telling me they are the noisy - so who knows !!

My point exactly. These user-review sites have their uses for fridges or cameras but they're pretty useless for tyres, because
(a) few of us get to try enough different types to make meaningful comparisons; and
(b) the differences are generally small, subjective and hugely influenced by external factors, especially road surfaces.
My present 205x16 Pirellis are whisper-quiet on some surfaces and roar like a wounded walrus on others, just like the Michelins I had before. Wear rates seem similar too, but Pirellis (round here at least) cost significantly less. They've also been original equipment on my last three cars and, while I know there's an element of who can offer the best bulk discount, it seems unlikely that premium manufacturers would equip their cars with tyres that impaired their comfort or performance. Noise, in any case, is the result of a complex interaction between the tyres, the surface and the car itself, so there's no guarantee that a tyre that's quiet on one car won't be noisy on something else.
Just my thoughts. I'm sure all tyres are not the same, or I'd have saved myself some money and bought one of these 'budget' brands the tyre chains offer. But I do suspect that unless you can find someone who's had the same problem with P7s on the same car as yours, then fixed it by fitting different tyres, you're likely to be frustrated!

SWMBO's 52 reg Focus Chic suffers from road noise and was originally fitted with Pirelli P6000s. At 31,000 miles, the fronts were replaced with Firestone Firehawks but I can't say we noticed any reduction in noise. I understand that road noise was always an issue with the old style Focus and that this hasn't been dealt with on the new model.
I have to say, the P6000s seem to wear pretty well as the originals are still on the rear wheels at 43,000 miles and still have a few thousand miles to go.

Noisy Pirellis? Yes, I certainly do find them noisy. Quiet Pirellis, less so ;)

I have Pirelli P7s on my Focus (mk2) and find them quite noisy but good otherwise. That said I have not had any other tyres on this car so have nothing really to compare them to, and as already said in this thread the Focus is quite noisy anyway.

Noisy Pirellis - they're noisy alright. The quiet Pirellis are much better

I'm in the process of doing a personal survey using the knowledge of various tyre outlets. They seem to say that most simply see tyres as all the same - black and round. I've noticed that grip is seen as the only thing that matters perhaps along with with how long they may last. 90% of us simply want a tyre that allows cruising at 60 - 75 without having the radio on a volume 25. That's more tiring than anything else. The engine is generally half as noisy as the tyres - try it in neutral at 70 and there's no noticeable noise reduction!
I'll report back on Bridgestone's ER300s, Pirelli's P6000s and Goodyear's Eagles, among others.
It seems mazing to me that there appears to be minimal genuine competition for tyre makers - it seems to be all about branding-calendar anyone? If cars/engines can be marketed for quietness, why not tyres? They all hold the road adequately in normal usage, so what else matters. Time for a Top Gear test?

I could not disagree with you more Ed V. To suggest that noise levels are more important than grip levels is quite a statement.
And you may say that "They all hold the road adequately in normal usage", but I'm not sure I'd agree with you. Then again, even if I did agree with you, wouldn't make you feel much better the next time you had to emergency stop through no fault of your own, and your car was shod with whisper quiet tyres that don't grip so well.
The absolute, nothing comes close to it, more vitally important thing about any tyre is how well it performs. Noise, price, look, lastability don't even come close.
It's s cliche, but a very true one - they are the one thing connecting you to the road.

Tyretest.com suggests that the quietest tyres, in order are: Pirelli P6, Vresdestain Quartrac 2, Vresdestein Hi-Trac, Goodyear Excellence, Michelin Pilot, Bridgestone ER300.
This is not comprehensive, and was for 215/60 R16 size. I guess "winter" tyres will be noisier than summer. P.S. What is winter?

I have a 2.5 Subaru Forester and need to change the tyres. I have been quoted a very good price here in France for a set of Pirelli P7 tyres, but am concerned over future tyre noise. Does anybody else have any experiences to share?
Present make are Yokohama Geolanders which are quiet but I cannot get these in France, hence the Pirelli question.

Bazza - I'm not suggesting we all swop to F1 slicks!!
But that if P6000s are noisier than ER300s - I'd take the ER300s, which I'm going to do. One outlet did say that Dunlop SP20s were quiet, but most sites that give any guidance go for Vredestein or Bridgestones. I think Subaru has something going with Yokohama, as my dealer was reluctant even to admit there were other makes!! Good year seems not to have a quiet reputation, but a good one in all other respects. Each manufacturer's site does at least rate its own. Tyres.com seems good too.
