can someone expain why we have a bar code on the tax disc,is it owt to do with speed cameras or is it just for cops and traffic wardens to get some instant info?
|
I think it is just to allow the post office to scan it through their till.

I agree, they do do that in the post office.
|
I think the parking nasties can use a bar code scanner on it as well - for what purpose I do not know.

|
It may have something to do with checking the disc is attached to the car it was originally issued to, some kind of security feature against fake / copied / fiddled with tax discs.

2003 - DVLA introduces the Barcoding All Relicensing Transactions (BART) system. Under BART, licensing information is passed electronically to DVLA from Post Office Ltd with records being updated within 2-4 days instead of up to six weeks under the previous paper system.

Yes, it's only a barcode of the number that is printed at the top anyway. Speeds things up with manual processing and cuts down typing errors.

What about replacing number plates with giant stick-on bar codes, indicating reg no., tax paid, expiry date, MOT, insurance, etc? Then all "they" need to do is point a reader at the car and they would know all about us. Don't sheep and cattle have bar codes now?
|
|
Sheep and cattle have RFID tags certainly. There is also a trial of RFID'd numberplates and a manufacturer gearing up to make them in bulk. This, with the proposed reader in every lamppost would remove the need for GPS when road pricing comes in.

You would have to make them easy for people / eyewitnesses to read if the car needs to be reported to police for any reason.

Sheep have baah codes actually.
It's an admin thing, don't see the value of Police carrying readers. Tax details are stored on PNC now.
