Congratualtions to the authorities. Last night at about 20:00 the gritters were out. I saw them again at 23:00.
This morning woke up to a fairly thick blanket of snow. The main roads were clear and passable and a 100mile+ early morning journey to wilds of warwickshire passed off qucikly and without fuss despite the conditions.,
Well done.

We have snow foecast here in East Kent - but as I live right on the tip (Thanet), there is every chance that it will pass us by. Being surrounded by sea on 3 sides often means that everyone we know is snowed in, we can see all the fields covered in white, but in Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate, there isn't so much as a drop. Most upsetting I can tell you.
|
You should try West Kent, this morning we had about an inch and a quarter of snow. I should mention I live near the top of Wrotham Hill - the highest place in Kent. After sweeping the snow off the car there were no problems on the roads as they had been well gritted overnight. I believe we should be getting some more later today, oh my 9 year old daughter will be very pleased.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

And I thought Pole HIll was the highest in Kent - it always felt that way when I walked up from the school bus!!

I would have to agree. My M3/M25 run this morning took only about 5 mins longer than in "normal" conditions. I know it was a "decent" dump of snow, as the Mondeo still had patches of unmelted snow on the roof and bonnet after a 35 mile run.
If only the same could be said for London Underground which was only managing a good service on 2 of the 12 lines. 3 had severe delays, 5 had minor delays and 2 were part suspended due to a broken down train and a signal failure. Pitiful.
Cheers

I must remember that comment for the next time I see a broken down Mondeo! ;-)

Who would you actually contact just to say "well done?" I'm sure the gesture would be appreciated

Best thing is to write to the 'Letters' page of the local rag. That way not only do the personnel concerned see it, but the community whingers can see that there are some things to be positive about and grateful for.

What's snow??
Seem to remember it when I was a kid (some time ago)
Seriously though, I can't remember the last time we had any where I live!

First real snow of the Winter in Munich this morning - result, traffic chaos. Must admit it was very amusing seeing the big RWD BMWs and Mercedes having all kinds of problems.

Warsaw too, I woke up to a couple of inches.
Not exactly chaos but certainly delays. Very very slippy. No gritters.

Nearly a foot fell here yesterday at the far western tip of the Massif Central - the most I've seen since about 1980 in the UK. It was that nasty powdery stuff too, that caused such a problem way back in '62-63 (which I remember as well - stopped the school bus for a week!). Friend's brand new Astra (here) got covered in the stuff although it was inside a garage. Country roads don't get treatment here but our local farmer ploughed ours this morning by reversing his tractor with the skip right down. All I have to do now is dig out the poor old Accord - but it's warmer in here looking out.

This video illuminates nicely the hazards of icy roads I think. Looking at it I'm reminded of what used to happen in my old Lexus when one flake fell three hundred miles away. World's worst snow car.

Or perhaps they have better manners, and wait until they are out of the room before laughing.

And that, my dear Snail, is the million dollar question. Especially where Poles are concerned.
|
Nine inches this morning. I even took the time to measure it although it had been blown in the night and in the places where it had drifted, it was actually touching my knees.
Not so much fun when you have to get up an hour early to shovel it off your drive. We're in for four days of continuous snow followed by a big freeze so you have to keep on top of it. It's a private road, there won't be any snow ploughs. The problem is soon going to be where to put it.

Thought you might enjoy the email I rec'd from a mate yesterday describing his journey into Norwich.
"I have been outside and have counted the snow flakes. Total was about 86 give or take a few that melted whilst I was looking.
It would seem however that it only take about 80 or so snowflakes to turn this county into a complete disaster zone - it took me 1hr 45 to travel 20 miles this AM.
If the snow and the ice were not enough to have to contend with someone decided that today was the right day to bring out their 485 year old MG to play and guess what......it broke down on the outside lane of the Trowse bypass further compounding the traffic chaos. I suggested to the policeman directing traffic that he could tow the car to a more convenient location (breakers yard preferably). Oddly he did not appreciate my comments and asked me to move on......which I would have done if the council had gritted the roads.......which surprise surprise ...they hadn't and I simply sat where i was and wheelspun for another 10 or 15 minutes. I wonder if I can have my odometer reversed for miles that I have not actually travelled??
Get the gist of my day so far?"

There are enough car owners in Norfolk to create traffic chaos?

Wife away on business, mother in law was surprised when she saw it this morning. I have to say it looked truly beautiful until the neighbour drove his Voyager over it.

Was it like a speed hump, or did he take his time?

He was probably worried about his misses having some fun with it while he was at work.

One of those 'Grumpy old man shouting at the TV' moments - last night, BBC News 24 approx. 9:15pm - '...and now we go live to Guildford for the latest' whats this I wonder, only to find out that they've gone live to the council gritting compound, where the grtitters are getting ready to go out. The quicker the BBC moves out of London, the better to get rid of this London/SE centric nonsense. The first sign of any snow in the SE of England, and the jokers who put these programmes together seem to think it's important enough for the rest of the country to know.

I can't see anything wrong with it! ; - )
Are you trying to say that South East England - especially Surrey and more especially Esher is not the centre of the universe?

It snowed in Guildford big time, There was no snow in Manchester.
You want a live report from manchester about snow in guildford or what?

No TVM, they want a live report on how it isn't snowing in Manchester, just drizzling sootily as usual.
|
I think the point is that when is snows a little bit in the south (it was a little bit really, admit it) and disrupts a few journalists' commute it makes the national news. When it snows a little bit in the north it often doesn't even make the local news.
Actually though a live report from sunny Manchester about snow in Guildford would be journalistic genius. "Coming up next a report by Jeremy Bowen on the heavy and scary dangerous fighting in Beirut. Jeremy, how are things on your beach in Jamaica this morning?"
