It sounds like the oil level warning light. Presumably it only comes on at start up, and then flashes for about 10 seconds (well, that's what it's supposed to do if it ithinks the level is low!). Trouble is, they give false warning even when they are 'working', and could I suppose give a continuous light if the sensor is bust. Assuming the oil level is OK, you could unplug the sensor (but I think it's inaccessible on the back of the block) or strip the dash and take the bulb out.
No worries about HDi engines or particulate filters on ZXs....!!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

yeah, it comes on normally for a second or so at start up then goes off.
lately it has been coming on then flashing for about 10 seconds then going off again. i have checked the oil level and it seems fine. it is just really bugging me. is it anything to bother about an need checking out by a mechanic or should i just leave it?
thanks

Provided the level is OK on the dipstick, then i'd just ignore it. You could try putting a bit more oil in - they can be a bit oversensitive and come on if the level is only just down from max - don't overfill it though! It can be fooled by parking the car with the RH side lower than the left, or nose up too.

hi,
yep the oil level is just below full but i will top it up a bit see if that helps!! now you have mentioned it it does come on more if i am parked on a left hand kerb. its strange though, ive had the car for 3 years and it's only just started doing it.
thanks for the advice, if topping it up doesnt help i will be on here again for any more welcome advice.
cheers.

Citroen ZX wont have a HDI lump so it also wont have a particulate filter, its the good old workhorse XUD or XUDT lump in these.
