"She has now written a book aimed at helping other women succeed. "

Any takers ?

She has been trying for 23 years, 250 lessons, at cost of 3,000

Thats only 10.8 lessons per year, and each one cost £12. Lessons in Devon anyone?

There is the school of thought (ie mine) that says this person should never really be given a license. Passed test or not.

That's the average cost over a 23 year period. Probably £1.70 in 1973 and £22.30 now. Or whatever.

Now, the lady admits to a lack of co-ordination, is only able to clear the (very lenient) bar of the driving test after 23 years, switching to an automatic and taking an intensive course? Why do people think that a driving licence is a right? Not everyone has the collection of skills available to them to consistently and safely operate a pretty dangerous piece of machinery. She is an accident waiting to happen.

And some people are just not psychologically compatible with driving.

I understand that in Switzerland, you get three attempts at the test, then have to see a psychiatrist before being allowed a final two attempts.

Sounds sensible. I was going to say I think people should get max. five attempts at passing their test. If they cannot pass in that time, then IMO its questionable whether they are capable of developing the skills required of a safe driver.

Before Christmas we were having a good laugh about my Grandmothers old friend, who had hundreds of lessons and didnt pass until something like her 20th attempt. My Dad was saying that years after passing she was still an appalling driver, with v. little understanding of how the controls actually operated the car. Funny stories of her clutch slipping, pavement clipping antics, and ending up in Manchester when she was supposed to be going to Leeds.
My Uncle stopped us in our tracks when he said she once pulled out of a junction without looking, into the path of a motorbike, and the rider was crippled for life in the crash. Not funny at all...

I had 16 x lessons in 1964 @ 17/6p each (£0.875) making £14.00 in total.

Taking the driving test fee £1.50 + 50p for hire of the car for 1 hour it cost me less than £20.

I believe lessons are now £20-£30 / hour

My dad gave me £15 for my 17th birthday in 1970. I already had a motorbike licence and having worked on farms for some years could use the clutch, reverse etc. I had 8 lessons at £1 a time (at a small discount from a family friend who was a driving instructor) and then passed my test. The £15 paid for the lessons, the test, changing the licence to a full one and I still had change! (We also used to eat hot gravel for breakfast and give each other lumps of coal as christmas presents - but we were happy). My first car, an Austin A35, cost a whopping £7.50 as it had no reverse gear at the time. I fixed that with a new gear cluster, did 17,000 miles in it and then sold it £30. Tell that to kids today and they wouldn't believe you.

No, in my opinion she shouldn't be driving on our roads.

There should be a limited number of attempts allowed to pass the driving test, there aren't many assessments where you are allowed an infinite number of attempts to pass.

The system which allows this to happen needs changing.

I agree. There definitely should be a limit on the number of attempts at taking the driving test as it is most likely that minor errors caused by nervousness caused the fails before and it is doubtful if that nervousness has been reduced by so many tests.

Just remember that your doctor or dentist has a 50% chance of being in the bottom half of the class that passed. Sobering thought.

Remember the woman only failed one driving test. One of the reasons for taking so long was lack of interest in actually passing, a fear of failure and lack of confidence- my wife reckons she must have had over 100 lessons over 10 years, it wasn't until she actually wanted to drive that she set her mind to it and passed within 6 months.

False identity driving tests are on the rise as it is. If you have a 'three strikes and you are out' rule there will be a lucrative business in taking driving tests for other people - so you get more people driving who have a licence but never actually took a test. Cash passing hands between learner and examiner will also be a concern.
