i have 2002 peugeot hdi turbo deisel and when i start it up DIESEL ADDITIVE MINIMUM LEVEL appears on the screen of the onboard computer. can any 1 tell me what it is ? how urgent it is ? can i get it done any where else other than a dealership as they want £225 to do it

It's urea, I think. You could try searching for urea online.

thanks 4 that ! but what is urea ?

It's definitely not urea!

It's a fluid called Eolys based on cerium. Leave it to a dealer to replace, as you'll likely need the exhaust particle filter either servicing or replacing at around the same time.

Do not change your fap filter first it will cost you £455.63p just for the filter and £25.00p a litre
for the additive.I have this problem at the moment after 38k miles and they are trying for me to change
my fly wheel and clutch [ of which there is no problem with] for £1057.00p as well

ade thanks ! but what is a fap filter? a filter has not been mentioned!
diesel additive - Hamsafar
Yes, I have looked it up, sorry Urea en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdBlue is the latest silly enviromentalist craze apparently. Not what your car has.

I have no idea what it is or where....peugeot just said it needs changing even though they did,nt try to top up the
fluid because they did,nt have any!!!

FAP filter is the particle filter fitted into the exhaust system.
It is downstream of the cat & bolted direct to the cat ( on my C5 2.2 hdi)
Cleaning the FAP just involves removing the filter & cleaning by jetting with clean water (took me about an hour of reverse jetting & draining)
Re-fit the filter then run the engine with the downstream end of the filter disconnected from the rest of the exhaust system.
When the water & steam has cleared, allow the filter to cool then refit to the rear exhaust system.
The eloys fluid container is a small black tank adjacent to the fuel tank.
Eloys fluid is available in 1 litre & 5 litre pack from the dealer, 1 litre should last about 10k miles.
Refil packs come complete with the nescessary tubes to refill the eloys tank easilly.

Yes; that's one way of doing it. A couple of points:-

1/ Where did you dispose of the water used to wash the deposits out the FAP? It's classified as toxic waste and costs a fortune to dispose of legally. [That's why most dealers just fit a new FAP.]

2/ How did you re-set the additive-level setting in the ECU? Only the dealer's computer and a very few top scan-tools can do it.

Old and new Eolys fluid should not be mixed, so did you drain the tank residue and return it to the dealers for safe disposal?

Screwloose, I did see a post from someone, don't think it was this site, who had done the chemistry of the combusted eolys covered soot & it was fairly harmless. Probably a lot more harmless than the soot particles that would have otherwise gone into the atmosphere.

As you say, you can't reset the ECU. I'm quite happy to ignor the 'diesel addative low' message that flashes up on the screen now & then. Just another way to try to force the motorist back into the dealers clutches.

Whatever fluid the dealer sold me mixed ok with what was left in the tank & all has been hunkey dorey for the last 18 months since I did this maintenance.

You may be right; but quoting something that you once read on the net in your defence might not convince the judge....

Rightly or wrongly; the EU Hazardous Waste Dictatorate has spoken - and the penalties for breaching it's utterances are now extremely severe. I can't see encouraging others to clearly break the law is a good move. After all; waste oil is not particularly hazardous either; do you tip that down the drain as well?

If the ECU hasn't been reset and thinks it's out of Eolys; is it still injecting any?

I don't think there would be any judge who would be remotely interested in how I had cleaned my FAP. LOL.
My used engine oil gets stored in the old 5l oil cans & disposed in the used oil tank at the council dump when i'm passing it.
Would consider used engine oil more of a hazard than burnt FAP particles anyway.
Perhaps when all diesels are fitted with this system ( god forbid ) the council will have a container for waste FAP particles, I don't think so.
Hopefully someone will design a Dyson type system & no chemicals then be required.
I remember my old Honda motorcycles used to have centrifugal oil filters that seemed highly efficient at removing the suspended particles in the oil which could be cleaned out at each service.
No toxic contaminated oil filter to dispose of.
Eolys in my car must still be pumping ok or my engine would be in perm limp home mode, filter has to regenerate every 300 - 500km I understand.

Thank God that petrol engines are still available!

"Hopefully someone will design a Dyson type system & no chemicals then be required."

He was working on it a few years ago but all seems to have gone a bit quiet.

OK, we're now at minimum gas oil error report at 60k miles on 2.2Hdi

Where does one get the refill pack, tubes & hopefilly instructions from please?

Incidentally, lets say I removed the FAP entirely & didn't refill the elosys. Will I have issue?

Thanks all

You have to go to your local friendly Citroen/Peugeot dealer. 4.5l of Eolys is approx £100, great isn't it. The plastic Eolys tank is just forward of the nearside rear wheel, next to the fuel tank. If you put the suspension to max you can just get to it, but don't forget to support the car before you venture under it. Eolys comes with all the nescessary tubes & fittings. When refilled, you will still get the warning messages until the dealer resets the computer, although the system will still be pumping the fluid ok. I don't think you can do away with the FAP unless you can find someone with the knowledge to re-programme the ECU.

3 years ago it is rumoured that Peugeot did not have enough EOLYS and/or FAPs in stock for building cars and many were sent out without them as this was before EUIV regs applied. IF this is true there must be a way of programming an ECU to cope with the absence of the system. That said your car would then be non-EU compliant and subject to a higher rate of road tax.
