It's the master key for the immobiliser, although it functions as a normal key as well.

If you ever need to get a new key cut for the car, you'll need this red key to program the new key to work with the car's immobiliser. Otherwise you have to pay a Ford dealer through the nose to do it for you.

Ideally you should keep the red key somewhere safe as the "spare key", as you really don't want to be losing or breaking it.

Put the red master key in the ignition and switch the ignition on (position II)
When the red immobiliser LED (next to the clock) comes on, turn the ignition off and remove the key.
Wait a few seconds, and the immobiliser LED should come on again for a short time and then go out.
Put your new key in the ignition and turn the ignition on (position II). You have to do this within 10 seconds of the LED going off..
The LED should come on and stay on.
Remove the key.
Wait for the LED to start flashing.
You should now be able to start the car with the new key.

It should tell you how to program a new key in the car's handbook. However, if it doesn't or you don't have the handbook, the following website should be of some help:

www.mirez.co.uk/KeyProg.htm

This does, I know, refer to the Mondeo, but I think you will find the procedure for all Ford cars is very similar.
