Have seen 2 BMW's at a BMW dealer and want to know which one I should buy and how much I should pay / offer. Not sure what is the best value therefore which one to buy. Appreciate some advice.
I prefer the sterling grey if that helps.
1. 530dA SE Touring, sterling grey, 53,559 miles June 2003. Metallic paint
Dealer wants £17,495, black leather interior, walnut trim, bluetooth preparation, front foglamps, front seat heating, xenon headlamps, 6 cd changer plus usual standard equipment. Also, what phones would bluetooth preparation work with? Would it be useless wiht my Nokia 6230i?
2. 525dA SE Touring, titanium silver, 56,102 miles Dec 2003
Dealer wants £16,850, black leather interior, communications pack (what do you get for this?), detachable towbar ( I have no need for this), metallic paint, parallel-spoke 82 7jx16 wheels
Both would come with BMW assist for 1 year, 1 yr warranty and 1 yr mot and obviously full service history

Towbar would put me off the 525. As for bluetooth it does become obsolete, despite what you may be told (a colleague had trouble with a new Jag S type. It had an older model chassis which didn't work with newer phones). Check any phone you have or intend to get does work, otherwise the system is useless.

Those prices look awful high - but there again that's BMW dealers.

Hi there, according to glass's guide they're about right. 530d says should be £18k. Appreciate what you think thye should be and why.

Quite difficult to price these E39's now, prices seem to be all over the place (take a look at Autotrader) and I suspect that prices should soften because of their proximity (age and price-wise) to the new 5-touring, which would probably be a better buy and retain value better in the longer term, i.e. I would have thought that you get one of the new 5-series on 03 or 53 for that money.

Hi there, is there no way you can buy an adaptor or update the bluetooth? Seems pretty pintless otherwise they are redundant as you say. What would you buy and how much would you pay.s

Haggle and try to get the 530 for no more than the price of the 525. I agree that the towbar would put me off the 525: it's not the towbar as such but what it might have been used to tow and the potential wear on the transmission. And the extra power is worth having. But test drive it first and make sure you like it.

If the condition of both is up to the mark and neither has anything that rings alarm bells about history, I would choose the 530D without question. No towbar=no towing=no related strain as stated, it's a nice colour, and the engine is excellent and well suited to the car.

If you drive the 530d and then the 525d, you'll notice the lack of power in the 525 and want the 530 even more.

I heartily recommend the 530d, it's a great car and well worth the premium - you also get a preheater on the 530d as standard which is an option on the 525d - you'll welcome it when it's get's colder!
The 6230i will work without issue, but you may need to change the phone cradle - so ask the dealer to do this for you.
Have a good look on bmwland.co.uk, plenty of specifics on there which I've found extremely useful.
