Might be a few problems lifting it out of a chassis.;-))

Wow, thats big! Good find Phil.

But does it have a cam belt or is it chain driven. If a belt how often is it changed? Might be a big job :-)

I would hate to think how much a "contaminated" fuel pump would cost to replace. Any chance of a mis-fuel on this ?

Look at the cross sectional diagram and you will see that each fuel pump (there's one per cylinder) is gear driven from the crank. There is no camshaft drive - it's a two stroke remember.

Mis-fuelling of an engine of this type is unlikely due to the quantities involved (nobody transports tanker loads of petrol to a ship) but the main problems with marine engines like these are caused by water contamination of the fuel and dirt. The fuel filtration equipment will deal with these contaminants if properly maintained, although this does not always happen on ships with third world crews.

It's a pity that third word attention is given by some main dealers to automotive diesels.

Thanks - maybe I should have added a smiley thing.

Perhaps we should have a debate on how often to change the oil.

What about running it in?

You couldn't run it in; where would you get a big enough "Running in - Please pass" sticker?

What would it do to the gallon just ticking over?!

PP

That would depend on it's tickover speed. It looks like it burns about a quarter of a gallon per revolution - so if it ticks over at 30 rpm - about 8 gallons a minute. About the same as a forecourt diesel pump.

Bet the captain wishes they still gave Green-Shield stamps....

Confirms my reservations about diesels; admittedly loads of torque but they just don?t REV. I bet it runs out of puff above 4000 revs ---- (per hour)

A thought passed through what passes for my brain these days was - Do they demolish the factory and build the ship around the engine. ? If this not the case what on earth do they pick it up with and transport to shipyard.?

Assemble it in situ perhaps? Lowering the 300-ton crankshaft into place could be a bit fraught. What a fabulous job though.

You hear these huge diesels chugging away in channel ferries and the like. Very nice peaceful noise. Smudge of smoke too.

The channel ferries will have more than 1 engine, to carry more than 10-12 passengers, they have to. More likely to be medium speed engines, they run a bit faster.

MAN seem to market a more powerful engine - 87000 kW, or roughly 116 000 HP. See:
