Time for some new tyres - no complaints having done 30,000 on the first set.

Anyway, any recommendations? Any reasons to switch away from Bridgestones?

If you have no complaints and got 30K from the old I would stick with them. Not what you probably wanted to hear but if it aint broke don?t fix it.

I'm putting off the day, but it's not far away, so I'll be interested in your findings!

Mine is fitted with 55 profile, not the standard recommended profile tyres, i.e 60, which makes mine noisier than higher profile would be. They're Yokohama Goelanders, which are too X country for my needs, and therefore more noisy still than neccessary.

The Yokohama Db's are their quietest ones, but it seems from here and elsewhere that Michelin Primacy HPs are great all rounders, at a price.
No one seems to do a template allowing search by criteria - e.g. price/long life/noise/snow grip or whatever. All sites that do provide advice mandate looking at each choice and its marks in each category which is time consuming.
Given their life span, saving money on tyres seems a false economy to me, but obviously you need fit them to your driving style - do you like to corner on two wheels only, or cruise gently?! I reckon grip is over-rated, in that all will grip well enough for me, so noise is my big deal. For you it may be snow filled tracks in the Highlands!

I asked this question a couple of months back for my legacy (I got 33k out of mine - my driving is obvioulsy getting a bit girly these days....) I tried the on-line places recommended here but they came out no more than £10 cheaper than going to ATS for direct replacements, but without all the faff of booking into a fitter and the wait for delivery so ATS it was.

Hi Ed V

I run a 2.5 Forester with Yokohama 55 profile tryes, the Geolander G 900 type. I need a new front set which have worn down quite badly after only 15 thousand miles. How many miles have you done? The back ones are ok for quite a few thousand miles yet but according to the Subaru handbook I should replace all four at the same time. Don't know by how much this would affect the performance of the car if I just replace the front set. The all wheel drive may be a fact but certainly tyre wear is eneven, being heavily biased towards the front.

Cheers for the comments - I've got some suggestions off the uklegacy site as well so I'll do some research and let you know.......

I've done 67000, or rather the car has, so I'm assuming 'my' set are its 2nd set. I found the outside of both front tyres were wearing badly, so I got the tracking and alignment done two weeks ago for £100. The driving is now much smoother. I assume that any serious X country driving by the first owner will have affect tracking, as with any car. Since I do raods only, it should now be much improved on tyre wear. Certainly the front have worn badly by contrast with the rear ones, but they are of course far more likely to have been "knocked" by rough driving than the rear.

I have had my Forester from new with no off road use whatsoever. Therefore I am not impressed with just 15k miles on the front set. I also drive reasonably, so fast starts off the line are not a cause of wear. I live in France and have just been quoted 274 euros A TYRE plus tax, which is about £190 plus tax a tyre. Might be cheaper for me to pick up a set when next in the UK. Do you happen to know any national chain that sells these tyres and at what price? Many thanks.

Have you tried www.123pneus.fr ? Not good on Geolanders with such a low profile but there are some good quality alternatives at much less than you have been quoted.

The new tyres will have a greater circumference than the old due to the thicker tread, whick will will put stress on the drivetrain/diffs, i.e. the back wheels will be trying to turn more often than the fronts

Something like 70% of braking is done by the front wheels - I guess this is why they have worn most

Nobody is asking the question: manual or automatic? ISTR that the Subaru Outback Automatic used to put 95% of power to the front and only 5% to the rear in normal driving until it detected slipping when the balance was more like 50/50. This might give tyre wear more akin to a normal front wheel drive car.

Our manual Outback used up tyres very evenly all round and was still on the originals at 30,000 km (very rough bluestone sealed roads and bumpy gravel roads)

Mine is manual, and would report that although wear on the front two is more than the rear, it is not by a huge margin, but it is at the front that the uneven nature of the wear is apparent. The tracking issue hasn't caused any issues with the rear tyres. The mechanic described poor tracking as moving forwards like a dog walks, i.e. at an angle to the direction of travel, so I guess the front two are always effectively moving x% sideways as well as forwards! Now I think of it, he said it was the REAR wheels that were poorly set up, not the front.

To even out tyre wear on a subaru, swap the wheels front to back on the same side whenever you service the car. You should replace all four together so using this method at least they all wear out together.

My Forester is a manual and not raced so I am very disappointed with just 15K on the front set - Yokamama's. Bridgestones have been suggested which are cheaper, but does anybody know how they wear and if they are quiet? Thanks.

Must admit that front tyre wear was poor on my 2003 XT Forester Auto, although that was partly due to tracking being off and new Geolanders made a big difference to the drive, despite not really liking them.

Hold on, aren't we forgetting Rule Number 1 of the Back Room - no criticisms of Legacys?
