Audi mirrors not demisting - TimOrridge
Quick one really guys,

Got in car to come home from work, side mirrors iced up, back screen iced up. Put demist button on (which does mirrors and back window) Mirrors not demsiting, touched glass stone cold steve austin, usually it is red hot. Back windows clear in 5 mins.

Just check hand book and fuse 16 under bonnet 30 amp controlls both mirrors and back window, fuse has not blown.

Any ideas pleeese, could really do with this now it is getting colder.

Oh and forgot to say, the electric movement of mirrors is still functional if that helps.

On the VW Passat Tim, the little knob that controls the mirrors has to be in a certain position for the mirrors to heat up. Just wondered.

Well that sorts my problem too - the Golf manual says the mirror switch must be in the Off (O) position for the external mirror heaters to operate. Apparently you have to be in a Cold Climate to have them fitted (it says here).
Btw I need door defrosters too - can't open any door except driver's in tonight's heavy frost.

I think I may have sussed this. Forgot to mention that I replaced the switch to turn demist on because the bulb had failed in the switch (the yellow triangle bit) some months back. The part was off a B3 model Audi 80 (86-90) mine being a B4 model Audi (90-95). Had one of these before and that didnt have heated mirrors, but looked like the same switch. The part was clearly oft the older model.

I will check that at the weekend and report back.

Thanks for all replies.

Hi all,

Went to local scrap yard today, paid 3 pound for a switch off a 91'J model B4 shape. Tried it not worked, double chacked fuse with another 30 amper. Running out of ideas. Really annoying but to small to warrant paying for a repair.

Just a note on whether the off position is needed for mirrors to demist. There is no off postiion in the car, just an 'L' and 'R' button and a 4-way directional pad for movement. Tried all combinations anyway

Any more suggestions are welcome

Thanks for all replies so far.

Could be a fault lying between the switch and mirror rather than in the supply running into the switch, or in the switch itself. Perhaps you might look at the wiring inside the mirror housing. Could the donor-switch car have lacked heated mirrors?

Mine is a 2000 Golf SE and is still not heating its mirrors. The driver's side mirror has a vertical wire running through it, which I take to be the heating element, though I suppose it doesn't mean the heating was fitted. It might have been a blanked option and/or a broken mirror glass has been replaced with the heated glass option.

Thanks for that, i will check all wiring tomorrow.

Car has defo got heated mirrors as they were a godsend last winter, not had to user the all summer and when come to use them this year not working..

>>The driver's side mirror has a vertical wire running through it

This wire sounds like the join between the standard mirror and the wide angle mirror. The heating element, if fitted, is usually behind the glass and not visible.

Right then, I have done a bit of basic fault finding on this problem. (Audi 80)

Carefully prised off each glass of the mirror, element is a circular pad which sits centrally and connects to power via two spades. Connected 12v battery to spades and volia, heated up like normal. Repeated same for other glass and same result so glass is OK.

Fuse not blown

Put tester across the two wires from door mirror and no electrical output on both sides of car

I have traced the wires as fars the rubber flexi joint at each door before it dissapers in to the depths seems to be no damaged wiring.

I think it is the switch as they worked on the old switch

The only question I have is before it gets confusing, where would I get a Heated rear window switch for this car that has heated mirrors. If any body has one to sell taht would be great.

Any replies grately appreciated.

Thanks

A quick search on ebay for 'audi switch' produced 35 results, some of which were for the heated rear window. Worth asking the seller a question if they also operate the heated windows. If not, try breakers or a site like www.breakerlink.com if you can't find one from a local scrappie...

I have found a part number that may help

4A0 941 503

Could any VAG experts decode that please and let me know if that is the part that I need?

Many thanks again

Of course you could try checking the rear window defroster circuit for integrity. It's possible your system was intended to work through the window defroster and you're chasing the wrong suspect (although I have no knowledge of the Audi 80). My Mercedes' mirrors work like that (and the Golf's still don't work at all).

Have one on order, will be fitted after new year.

Thanks for all your help..

I wonder whether replacing MY switch will work the same wonder.
In the software industry it is not unusual for products to have software-key activated functions that are present in all the applications but some of which are accessible only by applying the correct key-code.

Thanks for all your replies, hope y'all had good new year

Due to a busy new year, sorry for not getting back to you earlier.

I checked all the areas that you all suggested, all seemed solid with no movement

That was lower strut, wishbone and bushes, anti roll link bar, spring and shocker. However I noticed on passenger side, the drive shaft had a slight horizintal movement to it, only slight i.e you could move it slightly torwards to gearbox and wheel hub in either direction, maybe that could be something? Other side was fine. I have not noticed any leaks from the gearbox seal.
