Collapse threads? - JohnM
Can anyone explain to me why the collapse threads only works for the first
page on my home computer (ie older messages are always expanded) yet
on my work laptop, if I choose older messages, they are still displayed
collapsed?
Thanks!

Do you have cookies enabled on your home pc?

Re: Collapse threads? - Mark (Brazil)
or perhaps a tool running which clears out the cookies ?

An indication would be whether or not the site on your home PC retains its "New" map ?

i.e. as you come and go from the site does it retain what you have read and not read ?
Re: Collapse threads? - smokie
Not sure this is quite right Mark. The threads show as read because they are already in your IE cache, rather than your cookies don' t they?

I have set IE to clear all histories and temp internet files on exit so everytime I come back here, it knows who I am (cookie) but shows all threads as unread (cache). Makes it a long visit every time!

Cookies are enabled - I cannot get to Lineone/Tiscali home page without
accepting the cookies, so per session cookies are enabled in the IE options...

something wrong there, smokie.

In the Phorum Cookie is a parameter called something like phorum-new-carguides followed by a number. It is this which controls the "New" that you see by threads containing a reply you haven't read.

The colour of of the line, in my case blue/black is a question of IE history.

Aha, OK, now I've read your answer I see that there is something I've been overlooking. The Mark All As Read - never noticed it there before, though I use it on other forums (forii?). Yes, that's in the cookie in my other experiences...

I thought that by "read", you meant the different colouring of the text/underscore...

Sorry to further confuse a confused situation...and thanks for (inadvertently maybe?) bringing my attention to this feature - I will no longer re and re-read entries...

John,

Not to be stupid, but are you sure that you are seeing collapsed on first page and uncollapsed on second ? What happens if you go two or three pages back ?

Are you using IE ? Which version ?

Do you have any tools for cleaning up cookies ?

Do you have the Content Security set ?

Back home again...
To make clear, on home computer:
I go to Back room, choose collapse threads - ok
Choose Older messages - I see older messages, but expanded.
Choose Collapse threads, and it goes back to start with collapsed threads
In other words, I can ony see one (the first) page with collapsed threads.
This does not happen with my laptop-if I choose collapse threads, then
older messages, the older messages continue to dispaly as collapsed.
Both are running IE 5.5 and Norton Antivirus
I do not knowingly have a cookie sweep prog on the home computer.
Home computer has Internet security set to Custom, Stored cookies disabled,
per session cookies allowed. Laptop has stored cookies allowed (required
for work)- is this it?

Home computer is W98, laptop is NT
Stored cookies... - JOhnM
Yup! Allowed stored cookies made the difference, collapsed stayed collapsed
But then changing back again to not allow them made the computer revert to
its original behaviour (the stored cookie was not stored?).
Is allowing stored cookies a dodgy practice for general Internet use???
Thanks...
