I read with interest that there are no speed humps etc in Eastbburne....well if you drive down through Willingdon there they are and vicious they are too. In fact Eastbourne is trying tocharge motorists L R @ centre by having parking meters at places of natural outstanding beauty ...like the top of Butt's Lane on the Downs and the Beachy Head area etc. Add to that the prolific speed cameras and the 20p charge for a gent's public loo on the seafront and Eastbourne shows its policy of fleece the tourist...shame on the place.

My town, a seaside resort between Liverpool and Preston, has had such draconian measures for a long time - the traffic wardens are a legend unto themselves for alienating both residents and visitors from visiting the town centre by car or any other means come to that.
Earlier this year, after a long campaign, the delapidated and often out of use toilets have mostly been replaced by those dual use Tardis like structures with, again, a 20p charge.
One wonders why anyone ever bothers what is supposed to be a holiday resort.
Even worse has been the pedestrianising of one of the town's main town centre roads (it's about 150 yards long) and causing traffic gridlock at many times of the day through the loss of a major road artery.
The laying of new pavement flagstones etc work began early last January and, believe it or not, is still not finished.....
Long stretches of motorways are built faster.

Parking meters have been up at Butts Brow for a long time now, but it is free after 6pm....Cameras are at least in the right places, slows the local muppets down, in there Corsas etc...Regarding parking charges, things are set to get worse, won't be long and you won't be able to park near the town centre or on the seafront without paying, same as in Lewes...Mind you the local vigilantes in Lewes have been setting fire to the meters:)

If there is a shortage of toilets you can do more than shme on the place!
Stuartli - are you referring to the once lovely town of Southport now a haven for Liverpool chavs on days and evenings out? What a dump!

Similar to one of our local parks where the Council are imposing a flat rate of £3.50 to park. Possibly OK in the middle of summer when there is an event on which will keep you there for most of the day. But in the middle of winter when the place is quiet and the weather unpredictable it seems pure madness. The only reason for the charge from what I could see was to pay the man to sit in a hut to ensure people had paid the fee!
What makes it even more ludicrous is there is ample parking on the park access road and in two other large car parks within the park grounds.
Local Government decision making at it's finest.

It's still a lovely town, but I don't go into the town centre at night except for special occasions - too much trouble these days.
Ironically Liverpool, thanks to zero police tolerance, is now regarded as far, far safer at night than genteel Southport...:-(
