One of the feeder roads into the town is being modified to include speed bumps. They are quite high and onerous. Yet, the speed limit signs haven't been changed; they still say 30mph. It's not possible to do that now, at least not without damaging your car. Can we still do 30 and sue the council for misinformation if the car is damaged ?

Only if 30 was a minimum speed.
You can sue the council if you have evidence that the bumps have damaged you car, but that would cost more to get than the damage would cost.

I've never understood why humps and chicanes are put up without a reduction in the speed limit.
The highway code says slow down, but the law doesn't (I think). Our village has the damn things and I heard someone muttering about someone who didn't slow down and I asked "why should they".

Oh come on, I hate speed bumps, but it's a LIMIT, not a statutory or recommended speed!
If you turned into a driveway at 30mph and hit the gate post would you complain that it's not your fault because the speed limit was 30mph?

You slow down for a pedestrian crossing the road don't you? Or for ice?
Or maybe trolls don't.

If a road has a 30mph limit and I perceive the road conditions to allow, then the law says I can drive at 30mph.

By putting speed humps on these raods ,I cannot drive at that speed and even below 30 ,say 20,I sometimes feel that my car suspension and tyres are suffering extra wear and tear.

Why can't I drive at 30 ?

The obvious answer is because I might kill someone, but on the other hand, don't pedestrians have a duty of care not to just walk across the road when they feel like it.

When was the last time you saw a public information campaign, targetted at the kids of today ? 20 years ago ?

That wouldn't have been much use, would it, LOL!

The kids (of today) have a lot of road safety training in school. Pretty well targeted I think.
If people can't judge how to approach speed humps then should have their licence revoked. Different cars need different speeds (e.g. an MR2 might need to be doing 10mph, whereas a Range Rover could easily cruise over them at 50mph - apparently...).

Aprillia, you have not tackled the question.

If a road has a 30mph limit, then why shouldn't I ,conditions permitting, be allowed to drive to the limit without damaging my vehicle ?
Jjust to even things up a bit, where pedestrians are not supposed to cross or walk, let's lay a few landmines, just powerful enough to cause shock.

Talking about pedestrians shouldering some of the responsibilty brings to mind a crossing local to me,that was recently installed.

Believe it or not, people just ignore it and cross where it suits them and not on the crossing. This road also has quite vicious full width humps to slow down traffic. The lights on this crossing also seem to stay red for a very long time.It also happens to be near a house converted to a mosque ! so make of that what you will.

I make that quite severe atmospheric pollution !! Have you pointed that out to the powers that be ?
