Just a quicke, is it safe to use ordinary engine oil in an air compressor.?

Yes but a mono grade SAE30 or so is normally recommended for cold start protection, remember the compressor runs cold for a long time. The only thermal heating is bore friction and actual air compression. Regards Peter

You would be better off putting the oil in that the compressor manufacture recommended.

When I was a plant fitted I saw many a compressor ruined by faults with the oil general lack of care.

It was either the wrong oil, oil that had never been changed or there was a total lack of oil.

For the very small cost of a bottle of the correct oil its worth it in the end.

£3.99 for 1 litre of compressor oil at machine mart, it's not worth putting anything else in is it.

My compressor recommended some special oil but when you read the instructions in detail,it was 20w/50 that was recommended.

Dont know about compressors but i use Cat diesel engine oil in my lawn mower.
Seems to run ok but mower engines are rough to start with so cant really tell if it runs any worse.
Been five year so i suppose ill have to change the spark plug in a couple of year!!
