I hadn't heard of it until today. Anyone know much about them. They appear cheep to buy, expansive to run.

That's about it. Interesting, powerful engine in a Eurobox. Marketing mistake.

The new equivalent Passat is the R36. Check it out.
A lot cheaper than the W8 (being a V6 3.6l) but also more poweful I think.
It's in auto car this week. Apparently only 250 W8 Passat ever sold in UK.

I remember seeing it in the flesh at Birmingham years ago. Looked just like a 1.8 Passat. A few subtle touches which were lost - on me and evyone else.
I can see no reason - status, looks - to buy one.
And anyone with a marketing eye could have seen that before it was born imo. The "buy me now" factor was zero...

I saw a W8 on the turning to my street once, I was quite impressed with myself that I even noticed the little "W8" badge on the grille and was sorely tempted to give the guy a wave and toot of the horn. Maybe him knowing that someone had noticed that his Passat wasn't a run of the mill TDI would have helped cheer him up the next time he came to fill the petrol tank...
Of course, he would have just assumed I was mad for waving and beeping for no apparent reason. :)

If we are to believe some of the other threads, he would have been too busy watching his temperature guage to see you:-)

LOL! Does it shoot up in proportion to how fast the fuel gauge sinks? They could call that a feature...dials balanced across the dash, lovely...

They seem to be popular with the traffic branch of the PSNI here in Northern Ireland who have several unmarked W8s in both saloon and estate form. I guess with 8 cylinders, they have a fair bit of get up and go.

Have you ever been to America? :-P

Yes and used by top brass as staff cars too. Can be picked up for peanuts at car auctions (Carryduff and Wilsons). Apparentally not that sore on petrol.
