Optimistic speedo on Nova - local yokel
89 Nova bought for £180, so I'm not complaining, but the speedo reads about 15 mph high, perhaps more, as 95 indicated was more like 70 actual. Additionally the trip ticks, and does not roll over.

My guess is that it's best to leave it well alone, and accept it, but has anyone had any success in repairing/replacing a conventional speedo using breakers' stock?

We had our '90 Nova from new until this summer, covering 126k miles, so I picked up one or two bits of info!

Has it got the correct size tyres on? The basic size was 145/80 x 13 but 165/70 x 13, 165/65 x 14 and 175/65 x 14 were also used as they have almost the same rolling radius which directly affects the speedo accuracy.

Like other Vauxhalls of that era the speedo was nearly 10% fast, as standard, 10% being the maximum legal error.

Replacing the complete instrument panel is fairly straightforward. On speedos of that era it was also possible to dismantle the speedo, clean and rebuild it. Putting the number rings back in a different position was how the clockers did it in those days!

I remember this from my mk2 Cav days.

There is a W=XXXX number on the speedo. These have to match if you replace the speedo, otherwise it won't read right.

My SRI would do 120 mph in 3rd once, and go off the clock with a gear left!! ;-)

Cheers

Suspecting it's had a speedo swap of course.
