De-cat exhaust - Mondeo

De-cat exhaust - Mondeo - AdyBeee
I will soon be in need of a new exhaust system as one of the back box's is nearly holed.

I have a 2001 Ford Mondeo St200 Ltd Edition 4 door.

I assume the exhaust system is the same as the St200 5 door. I have been adivsed to get a de-cat system to squeeze a few more horses out of the motor.


Firstly, are de-cat systems legal? Or will I need to replace the cat every time I have an MOT?

Secondly, I was intending to get a Ford exhaust, ( haven't checked the price yet, but I guess it will be around £400 for the cat back). Are after market systems well made and would they be designed to produce the low back pressue which my current Ford exhaust system produces. Would they improve responce or hinder it?

Your car needs a cat. Only pre 1991 cars don't need one. Yours will fail the MoT.

If I were to run the car without a Cat and replace it for the MOT, would the extra flow in the aftermarket Zorst improve engine performance / response?

A very outside chance you could get netted by a Roadside Emmisions test and lose a wedge.

The ST200 is the V6 Mondeo and has 3 Cats on it, one on each downpipe and a main one. As long at it has one cat and passes its emissions it is road legal. What most people do is replace the main cat with a decat pipe, relying on the other two cats for keeping emissions down, which works fine if the car is running ok and the other 2 cats are working. Another more expensive route is to replace the headers (downpipes) with straight through ones and rely on the main cat or buy a high flow cat for the emissions.

The 195 bhp ST200 has a more free flowing system that the 170 bhp V6s (Si, ST24, Ghia, Ghia X) with two tail pipes rather than one. Bosal, a respected aftermarket exhaust manufacturer, seem to only make one system for V6 MKII Mondeos:

It might be a Ford only part unless any specialists can help, could look at Demon Tweaks.
