Car with 12 months MoT for £180 - local yokel
I've just bought Junior a very tidy Nova 1.2 for £195 with 6 weeks' tax and 12 months MoT - OK, no guarantee that it will make it to the end of the year without further cost, but it's a good start. It came from an Ebay-based trader, who'd turned a loss on it of £10, not including his time to fetch it, and the cost of Ebay's fees.

Until recently I reckoned MoT was worth £25 or so per month, but it seems it's dropped. IMHO a carb'd car is a better buy for really basic motoring, but I suspect that puts off other buyers.

Foolishly he uses the same account for his purchases as for his sales. I found the listing of the car when he bought it, spoke to the previous owner, who'd treated it as his pride and joy for six years, always using Vauxhall parts, oils etc.

HJ says "One of the better 'older' superminis. 3-door is nicest and most valuable..."

I'll keep notes on its behaviour for the period and report back

On the surface sounds as though it might be a bargain - at least you've saved £50+ to have it MoT'd...:-)

I recall using a diesel Nova in the early 1990s and did a 200-mile round trip to Birmingham for the Motor Show as well as the 40-mile round daily trip to work; after four days the tank was still approximately half full.

Not exactly the most refined, stylish and even safest vehicle but for a little runaround you ca't really go wrong at under £200 with 12 months ticket on it. If anything major goes wrong its cheap enough to be disposable.

yep good cars especially if it has the 1200 ohc fitted
be aware this was britains most nicked car so invest in a steering wheel lock thingy to keep the pumks away

I'm told that steering wheel and other such locks don't work. A chum of mine worked for a chap who repossessed cars for a living. He reckoned that it took him no more than thirty seconds to get any extra lock off.

Absolute bargain! I was chuffed to bits with my Ebay AX for £380 with a bit of tax and 12 months MoT. Hope it works out for you.

Things like krookloks may not deter the most determined thief but if there is a choice between on with a krooklok and one without, it should mean that they go for the one without.

You used to be able to get a kit from the electronic hobbyist shops which made up into a gadget which let the car be started but then stalled a minute or two later. A couple of attempts at that would deter most thieves.

Then again you could maybe just take the rotor out when you park it.

I can confirm from bitter experience that the one night you forget to apply your Krooklok to your Nova it goes missing. Screwdriver to door lock (damaged door skin as well) plus broken steering column lock is enough to write-off a £1,500 car let alone a cheap Nova. Any amount of theft damage will effectively scrap the car.

In one mr blue they will usually move on to the one down the street, unless the nova has been targeted for some cunning plan.

Luckily the home address is out in the sticks - about 600m down a track that is now a shallow stream until April 2007....

However, she now has a steering lock for when she's out and about.

Had exactly the same experience with my eldest daughters ancient but good Astra. Invariably left at home, but the one night she took it to Uni and parked it outside her rented place the local yobbery took a fancy to it. Apparently it only needs a screwdriver and results in damaged lock, smashed steering column trim and ripped out wiring. A 2 minute job. It is not the loss of the car that was the issue so much as the emotional trauma and getting rid of the wretched thing as it was not covered by insurance until inspected by a dealer to confirm steering was not damaged. Local yoofs used it to transport knocked off teles, videos etc and were stopped by the police at 10.30 the next morning whilst cruising. Yes it was "Dwayne" who nicked it, and he was duly sentenced to community service and not ordered to pay compensation. Local old bill phoned up to ask if by any chance we had found a video lead from one of the knocked off videos as the owner would like it back - not a long covnersation.

How can that be? No one wants to fill HM's criminal universities with eager young students, because they are already full of experienced academics. But surely all these people who threaten careless parkers on behalf of councils could earn good money chasing down nasty toerags who mess with other people's property until they have paid back every penny, with a bit of interest?

What about a bit of real tough love, Dave and your car dealer friend? Hug a hoodie and pick his pocket? Might be a vote winner.

Small claims court might be worth a try.
