Apparently according to Auto Trader on the box yesterday when the French introduced wheel clamps the public didn't like it. Instead of complaiing to our beloved HJ and their Mps they simply filled the locks on the clamps with superglue, this was not just the victim but people who happened by one with superglue to hand. Clamping is eliminated I hear........what do they do with speed cameras? according to J Clarkson these were invented by a rally driver to gauge cornering speeds of his cars.

I'm not a Francophile by any standards, but I always admire the French for how they resist petty infringements of their civil liberty such as clamping. If only we defended our way of life as well in the UK things would be a lot nicer !

I spoke with a friend only yesterday who is a traffic police officer and he confirmed this...... trouble is who wants to test it.......even though you think you know the score, you still think...what if?

Simple - they had a succesful revolution, we didn't.

The french usually put themselves first - good on 'em. They simply wouldn't tolerate some of the nonsense UK puts up with. All these daft EU regs for example, usually written by the Germans, read by the french and only implemented by UK. Vive la France.

I wonder what they would do about speed bumps?

And who says the linked cameras have to be consecutive...

Correct.Maurits Gatsonides-he was a Dutch rally driver and invented the device in 1959 to photograph his team cornering.

Re SPECS - my experience of them on roadworks on the M11 is that everybody keeps to the posted limit. Clearly they are controlling speed well. However they are certainly expensive, I understand. If they are only slowing the traffic down and not making money they won't be installed in many places I suggest.

SPECS

All it takes is one location with the matched cameras in the other lane - as I understand they are approved for distance between two fixed points and these could be on different lanes.

But then you could go through that location at any speed in the same lane without fear!

Who wants to take the chance - just comply with the limit and they will all dissapear!

AFAIK the SPECS cameras in Nottingham paid for themselves pretty quickly (I've heard word of mouth claims of 6 or 8 months). There is one a few minutes drive from our house that apparently caught 76000 drivers and netted £4.2m in 5 years: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/427606...m

I drive through them twice a day, they do slow traffic down but I quite regularly see cars passing at 'risky' speeds (its 2 lanes in both directions). Either these drivers are gambling on being just under the 10% +2mph, or they're not local and don't know how Specs works. The "changing lanes to avoid being caught" idea sounds interesting, but I'm not doing any experimentation and risking my licence!

Splendid idea - but what happens next? This would only work if everyone responded in unison.

Very droll Waino! How many people do you know who carry a tube of superglue with them - just in case? Many years ago Harold Wilson was pelted with eggs and a spokesman (now known as a spinmeister) said that it was a random attack, implying that people were carrying eggs round with them, on the off-chance that they might see the Prime Minister!

A concerted effort would work - but it's about as likely to happen here as a concerted effort on council tax. The occasional pensioner getting put in jail and bailed out by sympathetic rellies will achieve nothing. British apathy is why we don't have unions any more.

Waino - what is the difference between ignorance and Apathy?
Answer - "I don't know and I don't care!"

There are speed bumps all over the place in France - some of them very nasty - and the French suffer all the grief that UK drivers have but you don't seem to hear complaints.
On the other hand, I've never seen a clamp or a clamping sign over here although tow-away areas are common - and enforced.

I was in Paris last week. It was refreshing to see that Parisien parking habits are as inventive as ever. Smarts are very popular there as they can literally be parked on a dogs merde.

What was depressing however was the continual reminders of just how much we are getting ripped off in the UK. Parking per hour right by the Eiffel Tower? Only 2 Euros. 5 kilos (about 20) lovely juicy FRESH Spanish oranges? Only 4 Euros. The list is endless.

Last time I was in Paris I photographed an unusual road sign near the presidential palace (of course I now cant find the photo!).

Was a triangular sign with a symbol resembling a car and an explosion. Inquiries revealed that the sign was a warningthat vehicles left in this area would be blown up by the army as suspected car bombs.

The ultimate parking deterrent - no-one would risk testing it.
French clampings solution - mike hannon
What it actually means is no lpg vehicles without cut-off valves allowed in that area. Sorry about that, but it probably deters some parkers! Was it someone French who told you that? :-)
