98-01 :- won't start when I turn the key - thecremeegg
I have a facelift clio (1998-2001) and when i turn the key it just ticks over but wont fire up....i know its a vague question, but any ideas what it could be? I'm not gettin any new warning lights on the dash or anything, and I know nothing about engines. I've beent old to check the fuses, but i dont know what i should be checking!

Thanks

When you say it ticks over, does the engine actually turn over, or is there just a clicking noise? If the latter it may be a starter problem, or even a flat battery.

Its turning over, so I don't think its the battery....i have had people suggest the immobiliser, that sound feasible?

It would have that effect. Try locking the car up as usual, leaving it for a moment and then unlocking and going through the starting proceedure. Try it with the spare key too (if you have one).

I'm going with the immobiliser/key......it works if i turn it to on then off repeatedly then start the car. The keys only 2months old as well, bet it doesnt have a warranty>>

I also have a problem with a clio that wont start, its a 1.2 2001 DF4 engine, it cranks over but does not start, i have replaced the crankshaft sensor and that did not work, ive cleaned battery terminals etc and checked fuses, ive tested for any power going to coil pack and the volt meter is saying that there is no power going to coil pack, so must be a problem somewhere with ECU or UCH unit? (or immobiliser) but if it was immobiliser then the red light in dash should flash i believe and it does not flash, a diagnostic test has been done on vehicle and came out with problem with UCH but they are not always that reliable the clio diagnostics? has anyone has a similar problem? is it possible to bypass immobiliser somehow if it is that? thanks in advance

If you have no power going to the coil pack then the relay could be suspect. I am nowhere near my laptop at the moment so I cant give you a location. When you first turn on the ignition can you hear the fuel pump power up for a few seconds? If not that again points to a relay fault or possible immo fault. IIRC the immo is integral with the ECU but I stand to be corrected...

Hi thanks for your help, tried all relays near battery, they are all o.k, when you turn iginition you can hear the fuel pump i think, well it sound like something is powering up.
i took ECU off today to have a look at, someone has suggested dry solder joints, but this ECU is a sealed unit, so how would you get in to have a look?
