this problem started 2 months ago.when driven below 60 mph no problems, temp gauge sticks at 90.take it past this speed for a while and temp keeps rising until boiling and pumping out of vent hole in header tank.just had electric fan and senser assy replaced but no difference

Sounds like poor circulation. Water pump?
audi a2 overheating at over 60mph - guyboy
thanx aprilia.is this based on past problems on an a2 or past general experience.

General experience. Overheating at higher speeds is normally due to circulation problems. VW/Audi have also had problems with waterpumps........

IMHO the people who changed your fan and sensor didn't do you any favours! The car overheats and the fan come on, generally, when it is hot outside amd you are moving slowly or are stationary. There has been trouble reported with water pump impellers breaking up but I don't recall what car make it was.

Before you strip down the water pump have it pressure tested as it shows all the signs of a blocked radiator.

Deja vu? Could turn out expensive.

what were your experiences.this car has done 168k miles now

Many of the water pumps fitted to recent VaG engines have plastic impellers, which crack and fall apart. It is fairly well known on Audi TT's, Passats, and Golfs fitted with these pumps to have this sort of symptoms, ie the car seems okay until worked hard. The only other thing to check is the thermostat of course.

i would have thought impellar too, unless the radiator is full of road kill?

There may be a simple reason for this but often overlooked. I have known bottom hoses to collapse at high engine speeds thus cutting of circulation and returning to normal at lower speeds. You may be able to fit an extra couple of hose clips on the hose to prevent possible collapse.

I see where you're coming from, but I can't see how the hose clips would help this ?

Collapse, as in get sucked out of shape and go from round cross section to oval. A jubilee clip or two might/could force the hose to stay circular. If you actually put a metal sleeve all the way along it it couldn't collapse - jubilee clips are a sort of half-way house, or do I mean half way hose??!!
