I am looking for a used auto diesel estate for between £12-15k. Despite the usual BMW 3/5 series or Mercedes options ... does anyone have any ideas or experience? Any thoughts would be most welcome ...

Audi A4 or A6 Father had the A4 avant with 110tdi and auto a mate has the A6 110tdi manual both
highly impressed.

Thanks. Also been looking at the Volvo V70 D5 ... which Honest John seems to like.

If you can find a good one in your price range, go for a 6-cylinder engine (Audi 2.5 or 3.0 TDI, BMW 330, Mercedes 270 CDi) - much less noisy. A perfectly acceptable 4-cylinder noise made by a manual turns into an insistent, monotonous drone with an automatic.
I have mentioned this here before and from the replies I believe that the Citroen 2.0 HDI engine in the C5 and the VAG 2.0 TDI engine in an Audi A4 are both well enough soundproofed to be tolerable.
But a six makes a much nicer noise, as well as less of it.

Yes - so does a five. Volvo V70 would be a good choice if you need the room.
BMW - is there a choce really, should get you nice enough previous model touring.
Skoda Octavia 1.9 or 2.0 TDi with DSG.
Are you going to be keeping it for a good while?
Sit on your hands until the Alfa 159 SW drops to that level. Shouldn't be too long...
It would help if you said more about what you want it to do.
How big it needs to be - not very if a 3 series is in consideration, how many people to carry, what sort of driving, etc, etc.
running costs matter ? Fuel economy matters ? mileage ?
Please buy my Audi Avant Tdi 130 multitronic next August. Mileage will be 39999. It might just be in the price range then. Just don't read any of my previous posts. It's a lovely car and I'll be miffed when it goes.

At the top end of your price range you could get a "brand new", ie pre-registered, Vauxhall Vectra Estate with diesel automatic (150 PS 1.9 CDTi).
It's a big estate, significantly bigger than Volvo, Omega, Mondeo and much bigger than Audi and BMW, etc.
Depends whether you want function or style.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Merc C270CDI estate. More room than an A4 or a 3-series, but obviously not as roomy as a C5/Mondeo/Vectra. The 5-cylinder is a good compromise between the economy of a 4 and the smoothness of a 6.

Bigger than a Mondeo estate?

"Bigger than a Mondeo Estate" - just check them with a tape measure.

I am sure you could get a brand new (not pre registered) C5 2.0 HDI VTR estate for less than £15K, as I saw the hatchback version of this model for £13K at our local main dealer just yesterday.

We have a T reg Passat, never had any problems - and servicing has been soooo cheap, but not quiet at idle from cold (1.9 TDI), but newer ones will be much different. The new Passat is bigger all round (inevitably) so the new Golf's probably like the old Passat.
