VW Santana GX5 - dodo
Have chance to buy an MOTd and clean 1982 VW Santana GX5. 105k and years MOT. Has anyone any idea of its value? I had one years ago and loved it so would be keen to buy. Thanks.
VW Santana GX5 - Altea Ego
Its 24 years old, its only value is the years mot. - 250 quid absolute maximum

Spose with a new ticket, £150 ish.
VW Santana GX5 - local yokel
You say MoT'd does that mean one week left on it, or 12+ months? It really would not be worth buying it with anything less than 10 months, in which case it's worth about £15-20 per month of MoT at best.
VW Santana GX5 - local yokel
Apologies - I should have RTFQ. It's worth £200-250 plus the remaining value of any tax.
VW Santana GX5 - George Porge
These are considered very retro with the VW crowd these days, if the car comes for £250 I can't see you losing when you come to sell it ;o)
VW Santana GX5 - dodo
Well have been asked £400 for it. 12 months full mot. Offered £300. Laughed at!
VW Santana GX5 - stunorthants
Just pay the price, you can do alot worse and many do. £400 is not exactly alot of money for a car so buy and enjoy. Its splitting hairs over value at this price. Just make sure there isnt anything major wrong with it or it could be a money pit.
VW Santana GX5 - local yokel
The sellers have an inflated idea of the value of the car. Without an MoT it is scrap, with an MoT it's worth the baseline, unless you have an unhealthy interest in cars named after dodgy heavy rock bands.
VW Santana GX5 - Adam {P}
Take that back.
VW Santana GX5 - Altea Ego
For once I agree with the boy

Take that back.

Could be worse... the Wolseley White Snake or the Vauxhall Van Halen. well havent seen a Santana for years so at £350 its bound to be worth a punt!
VW Santana GX5 - bell boy
a big lump of slab,i never liked them
VW Santana GX5 - stunorthants
Cant say as I like them either but the OP obviously does from what they say and the GX5 is a rare car these days, so id say £400 is a good price for a rare car with a years ticket.
Atleast its from VWs quality car days unlike the trash they turn out today.
VW Santana GX5 - Altea Ego
The santana was a dog, didnt sell to well in the uk, and those that did have crumbled back to iron ore.

But as you say very rare.

But then so is 24 year old dog poo.

A stately booted Passat, thick metal and lasted well for its time if well treated.

Which they hardly ever are of course.
VW Santana GX5 - bell boy
i always have that gorgeous vw carb in my mind and the will it wont it, but yes thick metal but so dammed ugly ,slab and i always thought the designers had lost the will to design (ha you thought i was going to say live)
sorry its late and she who must be obeyed is in brighton for the weekend, about 360 miles away so no turn that computer off now
VW Santana GX5 - stunorthants
The Mondeo is a dog but people still buy them and claim they are great, but there is one born every minute as they say.

As for rust - VWs were a darn sight better than most 80's cars for rust resistance. I know because Ive owned several 80s VWs and aside from the occasional head gasket, they were sound cars, if monumentally dull to drive.

Well the seller is certainly having a laugh asking £400! You can get Merc 190's for £400 these days.

Great Santana concert on bbc4 last night. What an awesome band.
VW Santana GX5 - ajit
Might not be a hit in europe but it is certainly a durable workhorse in China
VW Santana GX5 - Lud
Heard them on Hamstead Heath in the late sixties. Only so-so I thought, but perhaps they were having an off evening. Indeed perhaps they were Jefferson Airplane. It was the sixties after all...

I had a GX5 a few years back and also a couple of Passat GL5 estates. Probably some of the best cars I've ever owned, fast, economical (38mpg),and none of them ever gave me any trouble at all, even took the GX to Germany and battered up and down the autobahns dicing with BM's and Audi's. The GX5 was also towcar of the year for 2 years in a row IIRC. If I found a mint one now,I'd pay whatever they asked within reason...Its a car that will outlive you if you wash and service it occaisionally. I miss mine even now after owning C and E class Mercs, and even Alfa's.The engine noise is superb! AND older rare VW's are pretty sought after, even VW Derby's and Polo Classics...You cant lose!!

You want to have a look here, you do: www.retro-rides.com/ Or maybe you don't!

I had a mid 80s Passat a dozen years ago, refused to die despite a damn good thrashing. Changing down to 3rd at 80mph (made no more power but a bit more noise....) and I later sold it to a mate who drove even harder than me. That car is probably still going now

Gareth, thanks for the link. retro rides eh? Another 20 minutes gone. Love the 1975 Audi 80 GT, surely you have to the line at an Ital British Gas van?

£400 for a Passat Saloon, albeit 24 years old, seems ok to me, working opposite Bristol Uni Student Union gives you an idea of the coolness of the older car: Opel Ascona on a T reg, several Vivas and a Fiat 131are regular sights.
VW Santana GX5 - Tiffx19
I'm a member over there too,run a Fiat X1/9 as my everyday car..It is possible, and most enjoyable!!! Older cars are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All 1975-1981 Polos have avid followers, and that includes the Derby. One Polo recently sold for £1780 and good Derbys are changing hads for £500-900.

As far as the OP is concearned. If you want it, get it. Like someone else said, in the right places, you'll get your money back.

Haha, they're not that bad oldman. Far better than many other offering at the time.
VW Santana GX5 - Tiffx19
They could rust though, big style! Horrible steering too,but far better than a Fiesta IMO..My dad had a 79 Polo GLS for years, and when I passed my test I thrashed it everywhere. It stood up surprisingly well ! ! :)
VW Santana GX5 - dodo
Just to clarify...Its a Santana I am looking at...

hey butt out dodo ,were talking polo's here--------------------------

;-) ;-)..................only kidding
VW Santana GX5 - DavidHM
I take it you're looking at one as something to polish, take for drives and generally remind you of the mid 80s, rather than as a daily driver?

If so, £400 is fine value and whilst I would try to get something ten years newer (but not really that much more civilised) as a daily driver, it will have plenty of power (115 or 135 bhp) and equipment (should have central locking, PAS, electric windows and a useful stereo at least). It's not exactly a style icon but if I were going car shopping in 1982, I'd take one of these by a mile over an early Sierra or Mark 2 Cavalier.

VW Santana GX5 - dodo
Thanks the last poast sums it up perfectly. I would like something a little different for occasional runs to supplement a Ford Focus and a Mazda MPV. I recently sold a late 80s Golf Mk2 that a young neighbour tortured me to sell. So come tomorrow I'll see if the Santana is till there. Thanks everyone (and yes even I had a positive experience of a Polo Mk1 1.3 GLS for several years in the early 80s!)

well why not buy something faintly interesting or exciting?

VW Santana GX5 - stunorthants
95% of cars of this age that are 'interesting or exciting' are also unreliable unless its german, in which case all the good models are well over priced by enthusiasts. I think dodo is making a sensible and individual choice.

Also and the most important point of all TVM - what interests or excites one individual may not be the same as you, so if dodo finds a GX5 interesting, then he has found a car that is right for what him. Obviously if he was buying the car for you, what you find interesting would be more important eh.
VW Santana GX5 - stunorthants
Just like to point out that I have been driving 80's cars as daily drivers for years and aside from a few fripperies, cars havent changed that much since then. They are perfectly suitable as daily drivers if you buy sensibly ( ie car in good cond, dont buy a design thats been around since the 70's and one with a good reputation for reliability even when older ).

I use my Mazda ( 1986 ) on a daily basis and aside from not having power steering, its as easy to drive and reliable as any other car ive ever owned of any age. I do about 1000 miles a month in it without problems.
VW Santana GX5 - zm
If you love these as much as you do, why don't you consider importing a BRAND NEW one from China, they are still being made for the Chinese. I think it is called something like the 3000 or Santana 3000, can't remember exactly though. 1/18 scale replicas also keep popping up on ebay, might keep you amused for a bit!.
