Identikit - 207/Clio/Corsa - ukbeefy
Is it just me or are these 3 new cars almost identical in fundamental shape - ie glasshouse/pillars/proportion etc Also from the rear three quarter position they seem very similar too. I noticed this walking past my local rental outlet which has a ton of the first two and normally has alot of Corsas too.

What on earth is the point of such "me too" styling?

Will there not be alot of people in supermarket car parks trying to get into strangers' cars (and no I am not meaning that sort of activity after the supermarket has closed..)?

Even more near-identical are the current-model Fiesta and Polo. You have to look at the badge to know which is which.

Seems to go in cycles -- ISTR that all cars in the early-mid 90s looked pretty much identical to each other as well.

One company produces a "radical" design (in reality a bunch of manufacturers throw random design cues at their cars in an attempt to be different and eventually something sticks) and then everyone else copies.

Then eventually the punter gets sick of these clone designs and the whole thing starts over again.

I can definitely see the similarities in the three cars -- I'm sure that if Toyota had produced a similar design this year everyone would be shouting plagiarism as usual -- but the Pug takes things one step further. The front-ends on these newer *07 cars are hideous IMO.

What amazes me is how design houses - usually Italian - commissioned in isolation by more than one of the major motor manufacturers manage to palm off what is essentially the same set of design cues for both. If I'd just paid ££££££s for the privilege of granting them the contract to design something unique and befitting my company, I wouldn't be happy. History is littered with such cars.

Well certainly you'd think that the marketing guys would have an easier time if people really could tell which car was which.

As you say things have happened in the past eg the Pinifarina Austin Cambridge and Peugeot 404 looking very similar.
