Mondeo Knocking - Andrew Velcro
Hello

My 2001 1.8 Zetec Mondeo is making a knocking noise when I go over a bump. The noise seems to be coming from the rear offside. Any ideas

Thanks

Andy

Rear sub frame bushes, off side may have failed though both sides need replacement, they typically go at around 4 years / 100k miles. Until earlier this year the Ford solution was a new subframe at about £350 fitted however they can now bond in new bushes for around £150 unless the knocking has been there a long time and the subframe has got damaged. The alternative it to buy Powerflex poly bushes for about £70 and fit them yourself, not a bad job, you will need a laser alignment afterwards as well for about £35. I fitted Powerflex bushes myself last January however I might have been tempted to let the Ford dealer do it if they were offering the £150 option at the time. On the other hand the poly bushes are probably superior and will last longer.

Thanks For the reply. When you say a laser alignment do you just mean the type of kit they use for tracking at the tyre dealers? Ford have said they can do it for £170 not sure if that varies from dealer to dealer.

Thanks again

They have to have a four wheel laser alignment set up, soem though not all tyre centres have it.

It cost me about £110 to do mine myself (at the time the Ford option was a new s/frame at around £350) so I would say £170 for a warrantied repair is fine.

Cheddar - do you know if this is a problem with all Mondeos, or just Mk3s? Does it make a difference whether it is a hatchback or estate? Thanks, Waino.

Mk3 saloon & hatch, it's a different suspension set up on the estate.

As kith says, Mk3 saloon & hatch, it's a different suspension set up on the estate.

Thanks for replies. Do you know if this 'weakness' has been sorted out in later mk3s?

While we're on the subject of mk2/mk3 Mondeos, is it any easier to change the clutch on mk3s than on mk2s?

Thanks

As far as I am aware all Mk IIIs to date have the same subframe/bush spec. I would not call it a weakness because typically it it is not a problem until 4 years and 100k + miles (has been known to go earlier though rare) and now that Ford do a bush kit you can have the bushes replaced at the dealer for around £170, a lot less than a cambelt change (that the Mondeo does not require) that needs doing every 40k on some cars.

Similar I guess though dont know, sorry.

Very common fault on Mondeos.
The previous post by cheddar confirms this very thoroughly.
No shortcuts I'm afraid, the rear sub-frame bushes are always the culprit.

I changed the bushes on my previous Mk3 and what seemed to have occurred was that the rubber had disbonded from the outer cup on the bush and was coated in a thin film of rust, so I would say it was more of a corrosion problem than the actual rubber failing. IMO it may be that a good squirt of anti-corrosion wax around the bushes could possibly delay the fault for a while, what do you think ?

Sticking with Mondeos, I've noticed that on my 1.8 Zetec that the revs drop quite slowly when you lift of the gas. Any ideas.

Thanks

Check out the clutch pedal position switch.

Where abouts is the clutch pedal position switch? Is it a matter of adjustment or replacement.

Thanks

The rubber disbonds from the outer cup on the bush allowing moisture to ingress hence the thin film of rust, so it is a case of the rubber bush failing.
