Has anyone bettered 71MPG on a Mondeo diesel?
Firstly I have managed to get 71 miles per gallon out of a Mondeo 2 litre diesel with 130BHP as an experiment! Amazing considering the 37 miles from Worthing to home on A27 includes roundabout on the chichester by pass. I drove at steady 56 - 60 MPH and lifted off accelerator when approaching roundabouts and accelerated very very gently as if pressing against an egg! this was done during 9pm - 10pm. I must stress I dont normally drive like this - would drive me mad!

That's pretty good on a car that size...
I managed 73MPG on a Golf GT TDI driving around the M25 in the rush hour a few years ago, never going above 40Mph but the traffic was always moving (a rarity). This also drove me mad but that was down to the traffic.

Amazing to get 73 MPG in forced to drive slow driving conditions on M25! I doubt I could achieve what you did on the M25 ( in the Ford compared to the Golf), but my experience in traffic jams is to keep the car moving even holding back with a space between and you and the car in front whilst the car in front stops breifly you are still moving and still moving when the car in front starts moving again. its the acceleration from standstill that kills the fuel comsumption!
Your the new leader on the scoreboard with 73MPG! i am relegated to second place! Appreciate you reply. Can anyone beat 73 MPG?

Is this 73 MPG calculated manually or taken from the trip computer?

does it matter. this wasnt a scientific experiment.
probabally more like 60-65 mpg but its still good. i used to get 65mpg on the same engine in a c-max

I don´t *think* the cmax has the same engine (think it has a PSA diesel), but am prepared to be stood corrected.

The C-Max 1.6 and 2.0 are Ford PSA 16v belt cam diesels, the C-Max 1.8 is a Ford 8v belt cam diesel of older mechanical design (though perhaps even better refinement). The Mondeo / X-Type unit is a Ford 16v chain cam engine unrelated to the C-Max units.

By the way the 73MPG was from the Golf.. and 71MPG was from the Mondeo.. (Mondeo using trip computer) One day I will fill the tank to the brim and do manual calculations to compare my figures against the trip computer - just to see how accurate the trip computer is!

My mate plus 2 passengers (I was one of them) witnessed his Skoda Octavia diesel estate record 74mpg for the journey from Bury St Edmunds to Cambridge - just over 40 miles on the A14/M11. This was on the car's computer. He achieves this feat by sticking at 60mph in the LH lane with the lorries. He reckons he can never quite do this on the return journey - which he puts down to the incline on the way back. Some incline in Suffolk/Cambridgeshire!

I agree no great incline - BUT -
You might be interested to know that Cambridge centre is about 30 feet above sea level. Highest point on the eastbound journey is just to the west of Bury St Edmunds at about 220 feet, I guess a steady climb over some miles would benfit mpg, and the reverse going west.

After a fill up, a warm start and a gentle 10 mile drive home at 30&40mph I once got over 74mpg out of my Skoda Superb 1.9 pd100, usually averages about 50mpg (computer says 50-51 calculation tank-tank 52-53)
|
I did 480 in a day one day last week in my TDCI 130, I averaged 62 mph which meant 440 miles of 80-85 mph m/way cruising inc a 10 min delay and 40 miles of back roads, the trip said 53.8 mpg which calculated was 52 mpg. I have also done 240 enthusiastic miles (50% m/way and 50% A roads) from a full tank over the weekend five up with luggage, the gauge is stil showing 3/4, trip is showing 52.5 mpg which is just under 51 actual. Both pretty good I reckon.
|
My 1979 YZ400 never did more than 10 mpg, but it was a bit more fun than any TDCi tediummobile.
|
My ZRX 1100 is also fun, will do IRO 40mpg though I wouldnt want to do 480 miles in a day on it!
|
I'll race you ......... across a ploughed field ;-)

SWMBO takes our TDCi 130 Mondeo from Wales to Manc and back Mon - Fri and she gets 47 - 51mpg depending on delays. Very rare to get any less. The trip comp always reads over by a couple of mpg.
