What do you guys think of the Vauxhall's semi-auto gearbox?
Like the one in the Signum 2.2 dti.
Cheers

If it's the "tiptronic" one you're referring to, then I have it in my Vectra-C 2.2 petrol.
I like it on the whole, but I do miss the sport button that was on the older gearboxes.

On a related subject, last Saturday's DT review of Volvo C30 a "Geartronic semi-automatic" is mentioned. What is a semi-automatic? Photo shows a normal auto gearchange on the central console.

Two days this week I had a Meriva semi auto as a courteousy car whilst they were repairing SWMBOs Astra.
Not sure if that's what you are asking about but If so let me tell you it is truely awful.
It's really an electric clutch so the car just changes gear when it wants but with the usual delay associated with a manual and without you choosing when that delay is.
I'm sure you can get used to it but I nearly came a cropper when pulling out and found the power dipping just when I needed it most!

The semi-auto i mean is the one were you have NO clutch pedal but you push the gearstick forward to change up and pull it back to change down gear, or you can just have it has a normal Automatic as well.

The semi-auto i mean ....
Yep, that's the same one that's fitted to my Vectra, and I believe in Smokie's as well.
As I previously said, on the whole I like it. It has the best of both worlds. Can be left in auto and you forget about it, or for more versatility use the manual side of the gearbox.

The types of auto appear to be getting mixed up here. As far as i know the auto fited to the vectra / signam is just a standard auto (i.e. torque converter) with tiptronic facility attached.
The auto in the meriva mentioned above is a semi-auto also known as automated manual
>>NO clutch pedal
Hardly any modern autos have a clutch pedal as otherwise it would not be an auto. The only exception i know of are the automated manuals in Scanias where the clutch pedal is only used when moving off from stationary.

Its a CVT auto, and they did have probs with the earlier ones on signums and vectras, water ingress from the cooling system, but vx were replacing them under warranty, check if what your buying has had a new box, if not make sure it changes gear smoothly.

I really like the semi auto. I've got the 3.2 Vectra. Around town I only use auto. But on motorways it's usually in semi mode. I haven't mastered a non-harsh kickdown on fully auto, but when you are sitting in a line of fast traffic just waiting for the guy ahead to move over it is much easier to sit in 5th then manually change down than use the kick down. Also useful for on-ramps of motorways.
