Hi all, need a little guidance
I have a 1998 peugeout 306 2.0 XSI and recently i have been problems with its idling.
The needle on the rev' counter oscillates between 300 - 1500 rpm, and more often than not the engine just cuts out. The problem occurs when the clutch is pressed down. This problem is intermittent, it will happen on only a few days in a month, but when it does happen it will continue throughout the entire day!
I have read similar problems on this forum, along with their solutions, but no one has really come back and said that the problem has been fixed
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance guys!

common problem is usually the idle control vlave/stepper motor these start to stick and allow the revs to fluctuate or cut out. try removing it and cleaning it, mae sure you use carb cleaner and not somehting like wd40 as the silicone content just clogs it up again within a short period of time.
also while your there check the breather hoses as these cause problems aswell. if not another suspect is the lambda sensor

cheers chris, thank you for your quick reply
any idea where i can find the idle control valve or stepper motor? (or is it the same thing), i have a haynes manual but its not in there.
Ive also had problem with the catalytic converter where it rattles as the car moves off, kwik fit have told me i need a new one. Could this be causing the engine cut out problem?
thanks in advance

it should be very close to the throttle housing (one the right side of the engine) (behind it)....have two pipes running to it (15mm ish) (one from the bottom, and one to the side) and a plug......it is about 50mm tall and is gold.....
It could be call the Stepper Motor, or the Idle Speed Control Valve, or even the Idle Speed Auxillary Air Valve.......
If you disconnect it the RPM should increase.........
Back to the CAT...yes this could also mess up the Idle.....have you checked te ECU for Error Codes??
One more thing.......if the cam belt is out by a tooth that can cause rough idling to.
