as above really, got a 94 306td which is only boosting to around 11psi after having the fuelling turned up so i suspect it's leaking boost somewhere, have renewed the intercoolr gasket, checked all the boost pipes which are also fine. only fault i can find is the exhaust downpipe gasket has gone and is blowing slightly, but surely this wouln't cause a boost issue ould it as diesel's don't rely on backpressure?

hi chris
I just recently sold a 306 td 1995 which has some real poke and i loved driving it, it was a great car!!!
just before i sold it i noticed a slight rumbling noise on acceleration and some boost loss. I had a back box replaced which was about to go and as it was comming up to MOT time i thought id get it done but this didnt get rid of the blowing sound and boost lost.
1st i replaced the air filter box because this was definatly leaking air but didnt solve the problem.
Then i noticed some blowing around the downpipe. I got this sorted and it was as good as new. The mechanic swore blind that it wasnt the problem though. Anway it worked for me so i hope you sort it and get your power back.
Let me know how it goes hope it helps. By the way if your retaining clips on the air filter box are rusty and slack check that for leaks too.

well it's the exhaust manifold to downpipe gasket, the round wire one that i suspect is blowing, think i disturbed it when removing the head

I think it does make a difference.
I have a 405TD 1.9, which is pretty much identical to the engine in a 306. My downpipe/exhaust gasket had just started to blow a touch and it felt lardy! The turbo was also dead (KKK turbo started to sound like a hoover/drill). I replaced it with a Garrett turbo. I joined the exhaust using nuts & bolts from a metal bed which is no longer used, as they were longer and easier to tighten and the old ones were shorter and a real pain.
Goes like a rocket now.

It is the pressure fromt he exhaust that drives the turbo. If the leak is before the turbo, then there will be reduced boost. Not sure if 94 dts had EGR valves (my 98 did). If yours has, make sure the valve isn't stuck open. I disconnected mine in the end.

no egr till about '97. i know the turbo is driven by the exhaust gases, the leak is the joint where the turbo exits and joins the donwpipe so it's after the turbo. it's the section where you have the wire gasket with the two springs and fiddly nut and bolt
