Don't know who would recommend this chap. There are a few errors on that page and he doesn't understand how EGR works!

What a load of twaddle, a fully synth 5W/40 has the same viscosity as a mineral 5W/40 (If such a thing exists?) I can see what he is getting at though, but I would always stick to manufacturer reccomendations not what some chap called Bob says ;-)

The fully synthetic 10W50 oil I used in my Impreza was not thin at all!
This shows up the joy of the internet, lots of information, but some of it completely wrong!

I don't think it is just the internet, this chap seems to run a business, maybe if he had a personal webpage describing how EGR works (that happened to be wrong) it would be ok, but he makes a living out of repairing and diagnosing problems on Diesel engines etc......

I like his list of common "faults" many of which turn out to require the pump to be replaced! Preparing anyone for the worst possible scenario...

I don't know if he is right or wrong, it is all above my pay grade -
However MB do recommend semi-synthetic oils.
I have a headache from the red wine last night - do you think he could help me with that?

If your car has a warranty, which you want to keep valid, best to stick rigidly to the manufacturer's instructions I'd say.

I would guess that when referring to use of fully synthetic oils and older diesels he is actually giving good advice but describing the reason badly. There is plenty of evidence that older engines develope leaks from seals if a change is made to using synthetic oils. Not to do with the 'thinness' of the oil, but something to do with the chemistry.

To be fair he is well spoken of in the Vauxhall forum for reconditioning diesel pumps which makes him a very skilled man.
His specialism is pumps and injector repairs and some of the pages in his site seems to make him very well informed on the various manufacturers.
Some unfair comments previously inasmuch as he comes from Blackburn or his address has the word farm.
As regards him not recommending synthetic oils this is an opinion stated by many others on this site previously. Some suggest that it is a marketing ploy and have very rarely seen engine failure due to the type of oil used.
My cousin retired with almost a million miles on his own HGV and when I asked if he used synthetic oils his answer was ?I use the cheapest oil I can buy?.
Not the same application as a car I know but it does make you think.

Funny that, I'm no diesel expert, but I always thought the filter was before the injection components in the fuel line and bits in the filter were from the tank or lift pump.

That's because the great majority of fuel pumped by the pump circulates back to the tank. But as you say, 'I'm no diesel expert'.

Ah, now I see, the disintegrating injection components dump the bits back in the tank, via the return, then they get recirculated into the filter when the fuel comes round again (that's me one step closer to becoming a diesel expert).

How would you know if there are metal bits in the filter though, they are solid cased, not like the old see-through glass filter bowls of old.
