Good car drivers need cams fitted to car - audiaudi
Hi

Some may have read my thread on the real/fake cop warning re speed.

I've just contributed to a thread where a member here was side swioed by a push biker at traffic lights as the biker jumped the lights.

A few weeks ago I was watching one of thsoe 'accident' 'Police Stop Cam Action' progs when they showed footage from cabs and cars which had cams installed to cut down insurance costs and settle cases quickly!

The hard drive cams run as you drive saving a certain amount and then delte and restart unless saved. The hard drive cams can have footage saved by a press of a button if a driver has seen bad driving or nearly in an accident. In the event of a front collison, the cam saves the footage itself and then the footage is used to determine who is at fualt.

I want one of these!

It could check how much you were exceeding the limit by when you got pulled over by an off-duty policeman ;)

Couldn't agree more.

Camera in front and back (already fitted to Primeras) and little back box recording speed, what lights were on and so on to a hard drive. Then, as long as YOU were driving properly, it would be plain for all see that the muppet in front didn't have his lights on, pulled out in front of you or whatever.

And if most cars had them, most people would properly because it would equally plain to see if they weren't. And the amount of accidents would drop. And so would insurance premiums.

Cue civil liberty / privacy argument stage left in three, two, one.....

(remember guys it's only a discussion forum, we're not making policy here)

Tota;;y agree MARE

I don't think the American ones record speed and have a loop system, ie record for a certain amount of time and erase and record again uless you save or have an accident.

The front and rear cams a good idea and if it meant lower insurance quotes, I'm all for it.

Re civil liberties, no probs as good drivers will have it voluntarily!

Good God man I thought you meant camshafts, not sneak-cameras.

Each to his own of course. Faugh!

I would voluntarly get a balck box recording all sorts of data, plus the cams, if I could. Just think how much fun it would be showing photographic evidence that a truck has cut you off badly etc to the company concerned. It would help in insurance disputes and prevent crime. If we could actually see who breaks into a car then we stand a much better chance of catching them. If police and insurance companies could use the data given from a black box then I would without a doubt have one installed in my car................. As for charging around B roads at dangourse speeds and whizzing up the motorway at 110mph, then an off button could be used.
Mandotory checks by police should not occure. But if using the instruments from you car you can prove dangourse driving by another driver, the evidence should be able to be used in court.

Somehow I don't think it will be of much benefit...:-)

The ones I have seen are fully enclosed solid state and mount on the windscreen behind the mirror.
They record 60 seconds on a loop and if a certain G force is exceeded such as a collision, heavy braking or going up a kerb, the unit caries on for 30 seconds and stops. They aren't yet available to individual buyers, just companies. The data is only accessible through their expensive software via USB. There is a good video on the net somewhere of one in a airport shuttle bus which has steering failure and flies off the road on a corner and lands on top of cars in the car park (which is 5' lower than road) and drops down off the cars still at some speed before coming to rest amongst other cars. There was also video of the sole passenger who fell off his seat and then when the bust stopped just sat back down as normal.

I remember reading about one of these in a previous thread about 12 - 18 months ago. It had a link to the firm making them, but they were not cheap. If anyone can remember this thread could you please post the link.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

cams fitted to car

my car already has an overhead cam engine. if the cam was on the windscreen, you then have to worry about whether it is belt or chain cam and how often to service it.

That was the programme i was referring to!!

Insurance co's in the usa use them to clear blame a lot quicker after an accident and drivers that opt for these receive up tp a 60% discount on their insurance.

They are currently in short supply in the UK, and the main push is selling to fleets of (probably white) van owners. However I happen to know that the company below is selling them, although the Website is yet to be updated! If you take the contact details and either ring or email them, they will respond to your enquiry.
