going from manchester to hastings monday probably at end of m1 around 11am. rac route planner says clockwise on m25 fastest route but is it so in practice or would i be better on m40 and go anti-clockwise.
thanks in advance

My view is that going anti-clock round the M25, past Heathrow, the M3 junction and the Gatwick turnoff will be slow plus, aren't there widening works in proress on that stretch (Heathrow to M3?)

At 11am M25 clockwise will be better, just remember £1 car toll for Dartford Bridge.

Living in 'Astings, I would be inclined to use M6, M40, anticlockwise to A21.
There are roadworks on the M25 clockwise around the A10 and things can get very congested.
Watch the junction though, you have to he in the right hand land to exit at J6, then be in the left hand lane for the A21. The turn for the A21 is one of those "ever tightening" ones so don't take it too fast.
Watch the speed camera on the Sevenoaks bypass, just after the bridge. Its a forward facing one. Also, there is one just past the Battle bypass. Just after the 30 zone signs.

Are they still there? I've been avoiding that section for a couple of months now, I have to travel to Bedford tomorrow (well, someone has to), so it's M11, Duxford, Royston and onwards from there.

Six and two threes IMHO - all it takes is one accident and your'e snookered either way. I did Gatwick to M4 the other day leaving at 0900 and it was running fine, probably 60 all the way, but schools being back does add some.

fly to Gatwick & hire a car
pity really, road journey should not be so unattractive, but this way you'll miss the M6, Birmingham, Coventry, the M1 (or M11), the M25 all the roadworks etc.
might even be a train or bus from Gatiwick, I'm not sure, I've not checked.
