Does anyone know if Costcos sell Synthetic oil to VAG spec 506.01 & if so how much ?
Costco - psi
i have a drum of VAG 505.0 fully synthetic chevron 10w40 that was about £25 iirc about two weeks ago, they sell multipacks of magnatec, probably be cheaper at halfords with their offers at the moment

Costco sells Mobil1

No, Costco do not sell 506.01 oil. Mobil 1 is not suitable for VW's as far as I know.

You can get the correct oil from Halfords, it is Castrol Edge 5W/30 this is 507.00 the new spec. Magnatec oil is not suitable.

Slightly off thread - I was in France last week and saw full synth Mobil 1 for Euros 2.40 a litre. I don't use it but is that a good price vis a vis UK?

Well it's £23 for 4L in Costco and that's miles cheaper than anywhere else. I think it's close to £40 (4L) in Halfords.

I'd heard it was cheaper the French hypermarkets, but not that cheap. You have to be careful as many of the Mobil oil's packaging looks very similar.

Mobil Website

From the Mobil 1 stable, ESP represents the very latest technology for the the next generation of engines. Not only does it offer the fuel economy, wear protection and lubricant durability of it?s sister product, but it now caters for the latest diesel emission technology. It carries a comprehensive specification list including Mercedes Benz 229.31, BMW LL-04, VW 504 / 507, API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4/C3.

Mobil 1 meet VW 504 / 507
So is suitable for VWs

I don't know if it carries the same approvals, but Mobil 1 ESP is *not* the same as Mobil 1. ESP is the low ash, Emission System Protection, version.

The Mobil 1 which I bought in Costco had not got the VW specs on it, I put it in my Landrover.
I will look next time I'm in Costco to see if they have the ESP stuff.

Aren't these VW specs complicated? Most people and most garages haven't a clue about them.

It's *very* difficult to believe VW engines are so sensitive they need a whole load of different oils.

Is it in fact the case that each spec of oil has a chemical 'marker' in it, so that VW can check you've used the correct spec oil in the event of a warranty claim?

Sorry this is off thread but is it worth joining Costco and how does it compare with Makro?

Thanks.

Yes it's off topic and not motor related, so just a quick answer to head off deeper discussion. I'm a member of both and these are my views only.

Costco has a much more limited range of wares but some of their stuff is really good value. Their meat counter is excellent as are their pastries :-) I've bought a few bits in the car department, but now ignore clothes and electricals (both of which are usually cheaper elsewhere). They don't have "specials" in the same way that Makro do, although members get a booklet of limited time vouchers which don't really amount to much - unless you are looking for the specific items on offer (in which case you need to diarise the week in which the offer is happening so you don'ty miss it!!) I got 4 tyres for the price of 3 once. At Costco you have to spend enough to offset the £20+ annual fee.

IMO Makro has gone downhill over the past few years and a lot of their stuff isn't that cheap any more. I go there more for the convenience of bulk buying rather than to save money. Some Makro Mail Specials are really good value but in both stores it's easy to forget that 17.5% is going to be added (non foods) when you get to the checkout. Makro Reading nearly always suffers from too few people on the checkouts so paying and getting out can take ages.

I do most of my booze 'n' fag shopping outside the UK but I don't believe either of these stores can beat the likes of Tesco's/Asda etc on price.

Now, back to cars... :-)

Its been discussed many times VW agents have two oils one for petrols and one for diesels in massive vats and not always so many. The fancy spec they quote is just for advertising to get mugs to spend a fortune .
