Sill Rust Protection - mss1tw
I managed to scrape some of the factory rust protection (Rubbery plastic like stuff, looks like it would stop Titanic rusting!) off of the sills while travelling around Cornwall fully loaded.

Would it be best to just book it in for repair, or can you buy this stuff yourself? I've never seen anything other than Hammerite type things and wax.

Want to do it properly however I do it as the sills are so vulnerable.

Its probably the spray-on 'stonechip' AKA 'Schutz' which is an acrylic-type thick coating that gives a slightly rippled finish. Its cheap to buy from a bodyshop supplier, but you need a compressor and shutz-gun to apply. You probably need to overpaint it too. If its only a small and not very noticable area then I would suggest something like Finnegans Blackwax put on with a brush.

Thanks Aprilia - do you know how much it would cost to get it touched up at a SEAT dealer? Would there be any advantage in taking it to somewhere independent? I don't know if body shops would do this sort of thing.

If its under a corrosion warranty then really it should go through the dealer (who will probably just run it round to a local bodyshop).
If no rust waranty then any backstreet bodyshop should be able to do this for you. Hard to say how much it would cost because I've absolutely no idea of the damage and whether the metalwork itself is damaged.

Cool - thanks again Aprilia!

I may be out of touch here, but i scraped and dented the sill of my Octavia (similar car) on one of those big stones that people put in planting beds to keep cars off (it was dark, i was in a hurry etc)

Anyway, I had a quote to sort that and a mark on the boot for £1200 from a body shop. Another one quoted £700. In the end, i left and there no rust on it 18 months later when i part exed the car. The dealer allowed £200 to sort it out.

My point was that i quite badly damaged the sill and it was fine with regards to rust.

Crikey, I'd expect a new sill section, new bootlid and all sprayed-up and matched for that money!

Thanks for that mare. Maybe I will do it myself in that case, if even 'sans schutz' it can still remain rust free.

I think that's what they quoted for - i only expected a new sill and a buff on the bootlid. Used to get change out of £100 for a sill on my Chevette.....
