Excellent!

Interesting snippet at the bottom of the article.

Last week a High Court judge ruled that Havering council's parking tickets issued before Aug 4 were illegal because they breached the Road Traffic Act by not containing both the date of the offence and the date of issue ? the tickets displayed only one date.

Excellent! On a par with the tale of the old man in the petrol station who thought he had used pump "23" (if anyone can find it, I'd really like to read that one again...)

Actually it is quite worrying. If the story is true, then it appears that the policeman used his powers of arrest in a situation that personally impacted him.

For example, you would not want to be tried by a magistrate if it was his shop you were accused of robbing?
Plod arrests Parking Person! - Armitage Shanks {p}
Shades of an officer 'familiarising himself' with a car on the M 54! Look after your own!

If as reported, hardly "excellent".

Would you like to cross either of those comedians?

surely P45's all round.

One other thing - can a serving Officer tell us if he can decide to don his uniform
at any time to "enforce" the law, or does he need to be "on duty" to comply with
regulations/insurance etc etc?

My money is on the latter.
Plod arrests Parking Person! - Armitage Shanks {p}
I think Excellent was meant in sense of Ha-Ha what a joke! If one can go out and make a Citizen's Arrest I don't suppose Plod has to be in uniform to make one. As to the rights and wrongs of who he was arresting and why I think the item speaks for itself!
Plod arrests Parking Person! - GregSwain
I just wish I could have a traffic warden arrested whenever they stuck a ticket on my car!
Plod arrests Parking Person! - helicopter
I laughed at this report.It seems from what the neighbours say the wardens in that are the usual jobsworths.

I believe that the policeman changed into uniform and called for backup . It was not detailed whether it was him or his colleagues who arrested the warden for abusive and threatening behaviour.

What concerns me is that both the warden and the policeman appear to have abused their positions of power in this case.

I will be interested in the outcome.

Me too - i suspect it'll be slapped wrists rather than P45s though.

In the sixties I witnessed two different squads of police, one motorbike-mounted, quarrelling over the many cars parked on the pavement in Rathbone Place, a dogleg back street with restaurants around it.

Very hard words were exchanged, aggressive body language used, voices raised and veins caused to stand out, but unfortunately no flurry of reciprocal arrests took place. I guess discretion was the better part of valour in front of all those interestedly watching car owners.

Amazing how fast the Old Bill can swing into action when the sort of thing they expect us to put up with without complaining actually happens to them. Or am I being unkind?
Plod arrests Parking Person! - GregSwain
No - sounds fair enough to me! They do similar things when caught speeding. Remember that story a few years back about the traffic policeman getting let off on a technicality - no border around camera warning signs or something?

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned public servants abusing their 'power'. There's a scary concept! All I want these people to have is authority - power is too much!

I'd be interested to know what the proper vrsion of events is.

police officers are a bit like nurses/doctors in that they are expected to be available (to some extent) 24 hrs a day 'in extremis'....... however donning your uniform at home to sort out a parking dispute is thoroughly and utterly extracting the urine......... no doubt a probationary constable with a touch too much testosterone...

there is quite a strict disciplinary code which will kick in........ wouldn't be surprised to see he becomes an ex-cop........ certainly as a minimum one with considerably less wages for many months to come

"shame the police and tthe council cant spend our hard earned money in a better way.ie catching burglars,muggers,dealing with vandals etc. etc."

Wondered how long it would be before this became an anti-police thread!!!

Must be true....it's in the Mirror!
Plod arrests Parking Person! - Armitage Shanks {p}
The link I posted to start from this thread was from the Telegraph and concerned a trafiic warden/parking attendant being arrested after an altercation concerning the ticketing of a police officer's car. The case of the woman holding policemen 'hostage' was also in the Telegraph and other papers. This isn't an anti-police thread, it is a "This is what the police are alleged to have done, what do you think?" thread!
Plod arrests Parking Person! - midlifecrisis
My reply was referring to a specific reply about burglars etc. not a comment on the whole thread.

Whether motoring linked or not - you know you can vent your spleen at the local Police Authority meetings. Check out their websites for PCCG Meetings in your area.

PU. I know that you are legally trained whereas I am just interested. I think that the feeling, in all things that have been mentioned to date, is that a disproportionate and inappropriate use is being made of police resources which could be directedted elsewhere on matters of broader public concern.

/Moderator hat on...

Please keep it motoring. Apologies to anyone who feels unjustly moderated, but there are other places to go to pick faults with the police, and indeed to discuss garden gnomes.

Thanks

Our local paper had a report last week about a street which had suffered problems with teenagers running through gardens, damaging cars (motoring!), etc etc. This had been going on for two years. Despite it being reported numerous times no response from force. Houseowner loses temper and goes out and tells kids to 'go forth and multiply'. Within a few days knock on door and £80 fine for homeowner for swearing at children. Response from police - don't take law into your own hands, call us and report anti social behaviour'. Yeah right, because that's worked for the last two years.

How is it an abuse of power on both sides?The coppers car was parked on the pavement,an offence unless signs are present to indicate it is allowed,so he deserved a ticket and should have known better.
Plod arrests Parking Person! - helicopter
Sierraman,

Only two people know the full story.

My reading of the situation is that , yes the policeman was illegally parked and he thought he could get away with it because of his position of power.

It appears the warden made some threatening or abusive remark , irrespective of any illegal parking by the copper or any provocation this is abusing his position . He should have done his job and walked away.

Plod arrests Parking Person! - Pugugly {P}
Was in Court today two teenagers remanded in custody for a motoring related serious offence. Police arrested within 20 mins of the offence following community "input" i.e. they were bubbled. That's how it should be. There were no gnomes involved all I saw was a well put together case for a hearing, probably assembled at around 3.00am when most BRs were asleep in their beds. These were uniformed Officers, not specialists in any field other than Streetcraft. Case won't make the press as Big Brother celeb was in town the same night and that was far more important.
Plod arrests Parking Person! - Westpig
suspect there is a great deal more of that than most of us are aware, but as you say it's not newsworthy so doesn't feature
