My car wobbles at 50-60mph during accelaration the wobbling stops if foot taken off throttle or when you go over 60mph.The gearstick also moves in 5th when throttle depressed or released.Wheels have been balanced etc and rear and front wheels swapped. Hub nuts tightened lower arm ball joints replaced. There is no play in the steering or wheels at 12&6 or 9&3. Suspect this is more than a wheel problem any ideas?

you dont say what make or model the car is which doesnt help the assesement of your particular problem, however i once had the same problem on a ford (cant remember what mind?) but the problem here was the balance weight on the longer driveshaft it was loose and causing a shimmy at certain speeds, check this before you spend any more brass lad......

Couple of questions:
1. Are the wheels steel or alloy
2. When you had the wheels balanced, where did they put the balance weights? If they're all on the outside rim, it may be that the wheel can't be balanced properly like that and needs some weight on the inside rim (when you get a wheel balanced, ask for both static and dynamic balancing). My Accord doesn't like all the weight on the outside.

The wheels are alloy and the weights are on the rim. Thanks for that i'll get dynamic and static balancing done. i guess this is likely to be a wheel problem because the wobble is related to speed??

Thanks. The car is proton 1.8 se 1997 i've had loads of these and mitsibushi colts which have been really reliable.

If it only occurs during accelaration, and the gearstick is moving excessively also, I would suspect an engine/gearbox mounting either broken or worn, I would get someone to look at this with the car up on a ramp.

Thanks.Yeah it occurs on accelaration only at that speed and the gearstick shifts only in 5th gear. I have a set of russian tyres (put on by the previous owner) do cheap tyres make a difference? I will get it looked at but want to get ideas from others' so i'm loaded with a bit more info to save me getting fobbed off or paying for unnecessary work.

If wobble comes on and off with the throttle then I would definitely suspect the CV joints/driveshafts.

jack the car up and spin one wheel at a time and look to see if a tyre is out of shape it will lift up&down, very easy missed by fast fit guys! this would give a vibration like you are having.

just a thought, i had this on a cav once and it was a defected tyre (had a bulge in it)
could be that

Thanks to everyone who has taken time to reply. I have noticed since the rear and front wheels were swapped yesterday the wobbling is extended to up to 70mph rather than coming out of it at 60mph. I am getting it looked at on Thursday so I have a few ideas. Cheers guys
