M40/ A43 junction: bad design? - patpending
Anyone else noticed this? (didn't find the subject using the excellent "forum search" on the top right of the screen ;-) ) (thanks DD)

Now that there are the long roadworks on the M1 all the way from the M25 to Luton (where you can be glad if you can actually do 40mph instead of standing in a jam) loads of drivers are trying the M40 / A43 route instead via High Wycombe and Silverstone.

The A43 is now largely dual carriageway all the way and now even has its own junction with the M1 at Northampton!

However, it can take 10 minutes just to negotiate the junction north to east on the M40 at the Cherwell services.

The reason? every single westbound to southbound vehicle off the A43 crosses every single northbound to eastbound vehicle at the roundabouts - and always has priority!

Bad design or what?

No junction on earth is as bad as the A14/M1/M6

See www.cbrd.co.uk/badjunctions/40-43.shtml .

Another option is to stay on the M40 to J11 then follow the B4525 towards Northampton, joining the A43 west of Silverstone. You can also go to M1 at j16 or 17 following the pre 1991 alignment of the B4525 via , Moreton Pinckney, Canons Ashby and Litchborough then the A5 (A45 after weedon for J16). This route leaves the current line of the B4525 near Thorpe Mandeville, watch for the left turn on the hilltop brown tourist signage for Canons Ashby and Sulgrave.

Link above won't work for some reason but go to the cbrd homepage (www.cbrd.co.uk) then follow the bad junctions link and scroll.

{Because of the full stop placed right at the end. I have now placed a space between it, so should now work - DD}

Should have known:

Recent motoring topic: there's a thread in the Back Room.

Discussion of roads: there's already a site on the Internet. That one's fascinating: www.cbrd.co.uk/badjunctions/40-43.shtml , if that link works, shows how late I am to make that conclusion.

For a list of all the road numbers in the UK, and stuff, look here: www.sabre-roads.org.uk/

By the way, Bromptonaut, thanks for that suggestion. Normally if avoiding the A43 I would continue to Gaydon and head up the Fosse Way/A5/M69 but the end of the M69 at J21 is appalling!

Thanks to Dynamic Dave for sorting out the links. Mine had a comma in it and didn't work either!

if you're headed for Leicester A5 then A426 via Lutterworth is yet another string to your bow. That one works v well for us starting near Weedon and visiting family in Narborough.

I've been on the sabre website before as well as the other one by Chris, i added a contribution about J4 on the M40, despite it's going through major redevelopment at the moment allowing slip roads directly to the carriage or motorway from each other.

Bromptonaut, whilst I love the A5 from the Porcupine at Elstree, I always find that any route involving the A45 Weedon crossroads by the Crossroads Motel turns into a game of "park your car at the eternal red light!"

I have never found a good alternative to the southern M1 once I'm already on it. I remember one December tootling round Hertfordshire in the dark and going through a crossroads one way after I had already gone across on the other road 20 minutes earlier!

Agree with you patpending.
This junction is just down the road from me.Its appalling.Have you also noticed how many lorries roll over as they approach the entry slip(southbound). The road is downhill and off camber, any lorry with a slightly high centre of gravity load and going slightly too quick will tip over.
